What to do about drinks

Renee, on July 9, 2019 at 4:15 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

So my venue includes most of the stuff I need for my big day-including drinks and stuff to go with the catering. Obviously alcohol isn't included in that price but we can choose to put money towards it. When we signed our contract with our venue, we knew that the only drinks they served through dinner was water or tea. We switched some stuff around and also had one soda added per guest in place of something else. There's some variety, and most of our friends and families drink tea or water anyways. Well we're on a tight budget and decided to have a cash bar. I know some people frown upon that but our venue is about an hour from where most of us live and I'd prefer people not to drink too much if they have to drive that far home.

Well recently I found out that they only serve water during the cocktail hour. -_- I'm not too happy with that. I thought they'd at least serve tea then too but it's just water. Our budget is tight as is and I'm not sure what to do. We want try to save money to at least get our guests tea and soda as an option. I know that soda is $2 pp and at a minimum of 100 guests, that adds up fast. I don't know how much anything else costs drink wise. Should we try to cut expenses somewhere else and at least pay for 1 glass of champagne for the adults?

Not sure what to do. Any suggestions or friendly opinions would be great. TIA

Skip the champagne and try to provide your guests at least free soda throughout the reception if you're having a cash bar. Maybe it's just me but having to pay for a soda would be somewhat insulting. I would skimp wherever necessary to do it.

I also think it'd be nice to provide something other than water. Could you at least ask them if they could make the water a bit fancier too like with some fruits in it?

They seem rather restrictive with their liquids! As PP's have suggested, ask if they can incorporate tea, soda, flavored water or even coffee throughout your event duration or if you're allowed to bring in soda/tea on your own. How many guests are you having?

I've asked, I can't bring in outside drinks. If I pay for it, then they can have the extra stuff. We're inviting around 150, so probably closer to 100

I definitely would skip the champagne and go with the additional tea and soda.

Definitely would do whatever necessary to make sure you provide tea/water/soda all night long including cocktail hour. If guests have to pay for alcohol, providing as many non-alcoholic drinks as possible will keep them happy.

Agree with all the pps, that you should do all you can to provide whatever non-alcoholic beverages for your guests throughout the reception. We went to what was otherwise a VERY expensive wedding, except not only did they have a cash bar, guests had to pay for ANY beverage besides water, hot tea or coffee.... (Keep in mind, this was a couple/family who prioritized TWO drones for videography, multiple favors, etc., but didn't even provide iced tea or soda, on a warm day in So Cal, to their guests. There was definitely some eye rolling.)

Then I'd put money towards more options during cocktail hour of nonalcoholic drinks if possible?
