What to do about a cancelled wedding?

Erin, on August 12, 2020 at 8:00 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

Hi there,

Long story short, our Florida Keys destination wedding was originally set for June 2nd 2020. With covid, we rescheduled to June 23rd, then July, then August, and finally enough was enough. Florida was increasing in cases and none of our guests wanted to come. So we did a small local wedding in Ohio (planned two weeks before!) and it was so beautiful!

But now, I'm stuck with a full wedding in Florida (postponed to march 2021) and we don't even want it! We're married and we loved our small, last minute wedding.

Now we want a house and to pay off our student loans.

However, the venue won't refund us at all. Not even a small percentage.

The only way we can get our money back is to find a couple to take over our contract.

Does anyone have any advice on how to find someone? Or what to do in general? We need this money for a house, or else we'll have to save up for years before we can afford one Smiley sad

Good luck. Not sure most would want to pay someone cash for an already paid venue. Maybe there's a website for that but not like selling a wedding dress. Do you have a fbook group in your area to post? Craig's list.
Have you two maybe thought of honeymooning there so you don't lose out completely on the money?

Actually the person taking over would pay the venue, and the venue would refund us. Much safer! We could honeymoon there, but it would be very expensive for just us for a weekend. It's a private beach property with beach houses for 25 people. So it would be a bit of a waste for two people to use it. I'll check out craigslist, thanks!

I'd be curious if your venue is still communicating your date as available to other couples. In other words, if a bride asked them today if they were open on your date, would they say Yes? Or would they say No since they already have your payment, and are just leaving it all up to you to find a replacement?

I just looked on the website and our date is marked as unavailable. We have paid it in full by now, so we wouldn't just lose the deposit, we'd lose the full amount. I could ask if someone wants our date if they would let them take over our contract, but I doubt it. They'd make more money keeping our money and also charging that couple for a different date.

Yeah, it sounds like if you don’t get someone to take you up on your offer then you’ll end up losing your money. I’ve had to lose a deposit from one of my vendors, but I took it as a loss.
Maybe negotiate with the other couple offering for a little less money, so that way you can get some money rather then lose all your money.
Like some other said above, take it to social media and see what you can catch. Good luck!
