What timeline for getting hair cut?

Now is as good a time as ever. If you get it done and completely love it you can have it touched up later before the wedding. If you hate it, you have 3-4 months to grow it out and change it before engagement pictures.

Definitely ASAP. Do not do it anywhere close to a month or two out. You might wish you had a little more length (but then again, there are some awesome extensions out there).

I'd get it cut sooner than later and I would also advise getting a cut you know you like rather than completely changing the style. Hair grows about half an inch every month, so you may just have to go in for a fresh trim to have it touched up before the wedding or the engagement shoot. Also make sure you're not going to a different stylist every time. Find one you trust and stick to them at least until after the wedding so they can produce similar results every time you sit in their chair.

I like my hair long, he does too, so I avoid cutting it more than 2x a year and really it hasn' been cut in a while it needs it.
I usually cut it before summer for something cool but I don' want to mess it up for the wedding
