What time should my cocktail hour start?

Meghan S., on October 10, 2016 at 9:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

My ceremony is at a Catholic Church. We are not doing a full mass, just the ceremony. So it should last about 30 minutes. The reception is a 20-25 minute drive from the church.

The ceremony will start at 4:30pm. My reception venue wants to start the cocktail hour at 5:30pm. I'm a little worried about the ceremony starting late (I don't plan on that happening), the ceremony going longer than expected, or anything else that would cause the guests to either rush to the reception site or miss some of cocktail hour.

On the other hand, if I push cocktail hour back to 6pm, the bar won't be open and some guests could be standing around until then if everything does run on time. The caveat is there are a few restaurants and bars right next to the reception site they could kill some time at.

So, would you start the cocktail hour at 5:30pm like the reception venue suggests, or push it back to 6pm?

How flexible can your venue be with the cocktail hour? Could you set it for 5:30, but have the wiggle room of pushing it back to 5:45/6pm if needed?

Your 20 minute drive will balloon to 35-40 by the time people get out of the church, into their cars and to the venue.

    So

Ceremony starts at 4:30 no waiting.

    5:00 it ends.

5:45 your guest arrive at the venue

Your venue should be able to accommodate people at 5:45 if they show up that early.

I'd push it to 6:00. There is virtually no way they will arrive at 5:30.

That's what I'm thinking, Celia. I know whenever I've been at a wedding with a different reception site I didn't immediately jump in the car to drive there.

    Thanks!

I would have it at 6 just to give guests extra time to get there. There will be few, if any, guests waiting around and if they do it's for a few minutes. They'll be okay.

IMO ... without reading any further than your OP ... start your open bar as suggested by the venue. They are the experts. If even one guest arrives on time (and I see guests leave early all the time for convenience), do you want to make them wait 30 minutes for a drink?

    No. You do not.

First impressions are everything when you invite your most beloved to your wedding.

I agree with @Celia on this one. I've never been to a wedding where it ended and I immediately jumped into my car and rushed to the reception.

I would start it at 6pm. People will probably not rush to get to second location and will end up socializing until cocktail hour starts
