What size vase is best? **Vendors Welcome**

Lacy, on August 28, 2010 at 10:00 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Alright, I think I've decided against tower vases. They are just way too expensive. A while back I fell in love with mint julep cups. Well after talking with FMIL a few weeks ago, I fell in love with them again haha. I love how my decisions always repeat themselves lol. Anyway. We are having 8' guest tables with 2 centerpieces on each table. Do you think a 7.5", 10", or 13" cup is best? They will each be placed on a 7-8" centerpiece mirror with candles around them, just so you know the general scheme of things. Keep in mind that I don't want them to obstruct guests from seeing one another.

I have prices for all 3 sizes and they all come under my budget, so price isn't a problem.

I actually used a 4" square vase because I didn't like how the taller ones caused the flowers to block the faces of people across the table. So, I guess it kind of depends on what flowers you are using?

Well we are using buttons but we are mixing them in with greenery to create a more natural effect. Apparently, it is called "whimsical".

"Keep in mind that I don't want them to obstruct guests from seeing one another." Hallelujah!!!! A bride who cares if the guests can see each other!!!! (To those with tall centerpieces, there are some styles that are thin or open, but most aren't.) Anyway, don't go taller than 13". How about 2 heights for more vertical dimension?

@Beverly, what should the total height of the centerpieces be do you think? I would do 2 vases on each side of the table, but that would get too expensive.

The overall height of your centerpieces should not exceed about 14". To be more specific, there should be no major obstructions b/t the 14"-20" space. So keep your arrangements below the 14" mark or above the 20" mark!

Ok, so a 13" vase would be too tall then, since the centerpiece itself would make it over 14". 10" should work since we aren't doing anything tall. Thanks! It is really hard determining what size you need based on pictures from the web!

I've been to Dollar Tree and they have nothing that I'm looking for.

I would go with one of the shorter vases. I wouldn't want to have to look around the centerpieces all night.

And I asked which size is best, not where to find the cheapest vases.

The words "way to expensive" implied that you were looking for something cheaper

@Shannon, I've decided to nix the 13" vase. Now I'm trying to decide between a 7.5" mint julep cup or a 8.5" rose urn. Here they are:

The julep cup has a 4" opening and the urn has a 7" opening, it all comes down to do I want a taller centerpiece or a wider centerpieces......

@ztkyx, yes the tower vases were too expensive, which is why I found the 3 cheaper alternative that I was asking about.

A good way to determine whether or not the centerpiece will obstruct the guest view is to place your elbow on the table surface with your fist in the air. The fist represents the typical eye-sight line. Anything around the level of your fist is typically a no-no.

With that said, compensate the height of the flowers inside your vase by estimating how tall you want the flowers to protrude from the vase. These dimensions are typically 1.5 times the height of the vase. Therefore, your overall arrangement size can be guestimated at roughly 13 inches or so -- more or less depending on your personal taste.

On a side note, using a 7-8 inch mirror beneath the dimensions of the vases you have chosen seems very small, even considering the votives around the centerpiece. The 7-8 inch 3-dimensional container being the same size (in inches) as the 2-dimensional mirror will naturally dwarf the mirror. Do you have to use the mirror?
