What size cake stand?

Vee, on July 3, 2014 at 10:12 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I'm having a travel wedding. I would love it if my cake stand could be a flat, hard, antique suitcase.

The girl who answered the phone at my cake vendor's shop said that for a 4 tiered cake (for 150 people) the stand must be 22 inches.

However...I have already seen one of their 4 tiered cakes (at my venue) and it looked teeeny. It was round and mine will be squared, but I imagine mine will still be a similar size. I don't think I'd need 22" for a cake like the one I saw. The thing is that I'm having a hard time finding an antique suitcase that's 22" all around.

Does 22" for a squared, 4 tiered cake sound right to you guys?

We needed a 19" cake stand for our cake.

A cake base and cake board are different, just keep that in mind. The cake board is generally around the same size as the bottom tier. The cake base is below the cake board.

I'm sure you knew that already, but here was our cake:

Mine will come with its cake base, yes. I think I will take the plunge and buy a suitcase (my stand) that is 19" long x 8" deep x 24" high.

Passing along a tip from my DOC: If using a suitcase or box or something similar for cake stand, keep in mind that cake is heavy. Seriously consider putting something IN the case to keep the cake stand flat and to keep the suitcase from cracking/breaking.

If you buy a suitcase that isn't big enough, what will you do on the day of? I don't see why they would tell you 22" if you only need 19". I would call the bakery again. I would double check the size they need AND I would clarify what they mean (22" circumference? 22" wide, long?).

Make sure they know it is a suitcase you will use for the stand. That way they can give you the best idea of what you need in suitcase dimensions vs a stand like rusticbride is using.

@rusticbride...What size was your largest cake? I don't know what size to go with and I like the look of yours. This is my inspiration picture. We will only have 5 large cakes and 1 small cake but the stand will be very similar.

Since your cake is a square it would need to be even 22" in length and width.

Okay...thanks ladies. Let me call the baker again then. Going by another 4 tiered cake that I saw though... it was quite small-looking. Mine looks fairly sized on that photo, but I haven't seen it in person. It could end up being teeny too. Lol.

    Will call again now.

But if they think she is using a circular stand, they have to account for the length diagonally, since the diagonal will be longer. We don't know what the cake dimensions are, so we can only guess.

I think the easiest thing is to take a suitcase there and see the board that they will use under your cake. Put it together and see if it fits.

Listen to the professional, the cake may be 14", and their plate that it sits on is 18" wide, and that needs to be on a flat surface that is 20-22 inches wide.

PUT BOOKS in the suitcase and staple the suitcase to the table, im not kidding. Its all less than two feet wide, which is not that big!

@Christine, The bottom tier was our largest at 10 inches wide. The others were 6 in. and 4 in. I think? We scaled the tiers back, and opted for kitchen cake to get the bigger bang for our buck.

Well. After speaking to someone else, this person told me 20" long and width. She said a firm, hard shelled suitcase would work (as the one above is). @Songbird I'll stuff it with books or something just in case. Thank you.

Okay so. Will an inch mean the end of the world for my cake? There is a Hobby Lobby 3 miles from the venue. If the suitcase doesn't work I can probably have someone find another for me there.

Or actually, @CrystalS idea seems the surest. To take the thing over there to make sure.

    Thank you girls!
