What Music genre is appropriate?

Rosalinda, on May 8, 2021 at 2:50 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
Ok so im making a list of songs I'd like to play at my wedding but some are not like love type songs some are heart break songs is that acceptable? Does the music have to be all lovey dovey or just whatever we like? My party has mixed emotions about it so I need outsider point of views please!!

A lot of music played at weddings is not specifically romantic. Talk to your dj.

We played a very diverse list of songs. If you are having a DJ they should be able to help you. Play fun songs that get people dancing.

I think that there are multiple songs across genres that are appropriate, so why limit yourself? I think lyrics matter more, and (call me crazy), I am not for heartbreak songs, but certain bittersweet ones can be appropriate (like during a father/daughter or mother/son dance).

How about giving us a list of genres and eras you like, and maybe we can give some input?

If you look up wedding playlists on Spotify, Apple Play, YouTube Music, etc there are always a handful of popular songs that actually have some seriously downer lyrics. For example "Marry Me" by Thomas Rhett is entirely about a guy who is watching his love marry someone else, and is very popular on those lists. Even though the song is about a wedding, I would never dream of playing it at one!

I think its fine to include some songs you like that aren't entirely about everlasting love. David Bowie's "Heroes" is a beautiful song that has particular meaning to my husband and I, but we specifically decided not to have it be our wedding song because of the lyrics, which include "nothing will keep us together" and "w
e're nothing, and nothing will help us." We do have it on our wedding playlist though. There are also some vocalists I really love, like Halsey and Julia Michaels, whose near entire body of work is about lost love, heartbreak, and topics I wouldn't consider appropriate for a wedding. So it's really a matter of personal preference, but overall I would avoid songs about infidelity, heartbreak, hyper sexualized songs, etc. I feel like song meaning is more important to consider than genre or musical style.

Yes thats what I think. The songs are kind of like some neon moon, talking to the moon, nothin compares to you, and some Spanish songs as well that are kind of sad feeling. My fiancé says its a good way to point out the singles for other singles lol. I just am not sure if its appropriate so wanted opinions.
