What is Your Opinion of Uplighting?

Lindsay, on January 4, 2013 at 12:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 27

A ton of people have raved and recommended uplighting to me but I have been on the fence about it. I am worried that it will make things look that color in my pictures and I also do not want my wedding to look like a club or sweet 16 birthday party. I have seen pictures of pale pink uplighting that was pretty, but I do not like the darker colors. The DJs that we have met with all offer it in their packages so we would not have to go out of our way if we wanted to get it. Here is my reception room. It is kind of dim, so I am not sure how it will be during our evening reception. What is your opinion on uplighting?

Uplighting is nice so long as the light stays on the walls, and does not illuminate your guests.

I shot a wedding where they had pink uplights and it was nice, but for some weird reason, they added a pink light to the spotlight and the couple's first dance photos were all super pink!

So yeah, just make sure your dj doesn't include colored lighting on your dance floor - or at least not for your important dance photos.

I love uplighting, really makes a difference in a room.

Far as pictures let your photographer know you are using it and they will be prepared. professional know how to take pictures that prevents the issue you are describing.

I think the light pink is pretty. The bright / dark pink, however, awful.

I'm kind of in the same dilemma. I got a few uplights in my DJ package and can't decide what color. I hate the fake/sweet 16/club lighting look, but want something more exciting than white/offwhite.....

When done correctly it's nice (although I wouldn't pay extra for it), but when it's not it's bad. Very very bad.

Uplighting is always a lovely touch, tho hard to do if you're broke like me. We are doing DIY lighting, instead of candles using floral lights in votive holders, & string lights. Sounds korny but the idea/scheme I believe will do the job right. If you have the $ for it, totally do it, any pix I've seen of uplighting, really adds that extra oomph to you're colors.

I agree, Rachel! I want to create that formal and romantic ambiance that we are going for and our room looks a little "blah". Maybe I will see if I can schedule another "tour" doing a night wedding so I can see what the default lights look like. Every time I have been there it has been day time.

The DJ we're using has a blog, and I've been going through that to see pictures of other uplighting jobs they've done. To be honest, I'm still undecided but it helps to see it in person or pictures!! I like the golden glow or an offwhite and may stick with that just so I know it doesn't look childish or tacky Smiley winking

Amber is a GREAT color for uplighting. It's orange/pinkish, and it's really really nice. Ask your DJ if they have that color, and if they have pictures you can look at.

I'm on vacation so I don't have all the pictures with me, but here's a few photos from their first dance I found saved in a blog.

You can see the pink spotlights in the reception overview. The first picture is really pink on the groom. The second one isn't so bad since they're not directly in the light.

I just did a New Year's Eve wedding where we did some blue uplighting and it really gave a nice look.

FutureMrsDi, I agree, I love the amber color! I think I may go with that. Pink is actually one of my colors, but I just can't stand the bright pink uplighting...

Rayy_chull: Agreed! The walls of my venue are pinkish and my bridesmaids' dresses are going to be a champagne/pinkish/dusty rose color, and I don't want to overdo it with the pink. Amber is probably the color we're going with. It makes the room look warm!

I debated this myself. We ultimately decided to go for it- our colors are turquoise, black and white. We worked with our dj to figure out how to do this and talked to our photographer on the best ways to get the look we want without us being blue in our pictures. She recommended to stay away from harsh bright colors, no greens and yellows. Many of the pros doing u plighting should be able to switch it out for you. Ours is doing a white/champagne color on the walls with turquoise accents in the corners during dinner and the first dances. Then when its party time, we are switching it all over to the turquoise color. Chat with your possible djs on what they offer- there are different kinds and some people dont use them properly. Ask them for pictures of what they have done and what your options are.

Rayy_chull: Aw that's so nice! I haven't fully decided what color tuxes I want the guys to wear..and FH doesn't know what he wants to wear, either. My dress is ivory with champagne underneath the lace so it really POPS, and because I chose the champagne color on my dress, I have NO idea what color I want the guys to wear! I was thinking a gray, so maybe a light gray? Ahhh Idk! All I know is I don't want them wearing black! And I know I want dusty rose and champagne. Maybe I'll copy you and say navy blue? Haha Smiley winking

I won't tell anyone Smiley smile Navy and pink is my very most favorite color combo in the world! FH is wearing his Army dress blues and the guys are in black with navy vests and ties, but I would have rather gone charcoal/navy if we had the choice, but everything is so formal and that's what FH wanted!
