What is the protocol for giving a gift to a Catholic priest?

Elaine, on October 18, 2019 at 2:19 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 8

I recently came back from my brother's wedding in California and I bought some souvenirs. I bought a bracelet and a magnet for the priest who will be marrying us, is that okay? They weren't expensive at all. I would just like to know what is the protocol for that.

Protocol in our area is a donation to the church.

I understand donating to the church. My fiance and I will be doing that. What I am asking is it okay to give him a souvenir that I bought from California as a gift?

Is this a gift for performing your wedding or because your close and you know he’ll enjoy the gifts? If it’s for the wedding, a cash tip is more appropriate in my opinion.

No, this is not a gift for performing my wedding. It is a souvenir I bought in California, while I was there for my brother's wedding. I just want to know if it is okay to give to him? A simple yes or no will suffice.

This isn’t a simple yes or no question without knowing your relationship with your priest. Are you close? If yes, I’m sure it’s fine. If no, I’d find it odd that you were choosing to give him a gift from a recent vacation.

I don’t think it’s appropriate. Unless you are related to the priest or have a close friendship.

I think that is fine, but I believe it depends on the Diocese as well. I’m Catholic and will be getting married in the Catholic Church (St. Timothy’s in Laguna Niguel, CA). You should be okay. I know your suppose to bring flowers to Mary too.

A little update: My fiance and I met with the priest marrying us yesterday, I gave him what the souvenirs I bought in CA, and it was fine. He was very thankful.
