What is the proper etiquette when receiving gifts?

So I received my first gift in the mail today and was wondering what is the proper thing to do. Do I open it since it’s wrapped or do I leave it wrapped till after my shower or wedding? I know I’m supposed to send a thank you note to let them know I received it.

    I opened gifts when I received them and then sent a thank you card immediately. They sent it early so you don't need to wait.

    We opened our gifts & sent thank you notes. For my shower, people brought the gifts to the shower so they had them shipped to their house (not ours).

    I would open them as you receive them and send thank you cards right away.

    When people got our save the dates some bought gifts right away, so we wrote thank you notes within 2 weeks. It was nice to get those checked off!
