What is the appropriate amount to tip banquet servers and bartenders?

JoanneRenae, on September 16, 2016 at 2:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I want to disclose that I fully intend on tipping my banquet servers as my caterer informed me that despite an hourly wage over $20 and an 18% service fee, gratuity is not included in our invoice (which is $2,000 over the catering budget we asked for).

On our invoice, the caterer recommended that the average gratuity is $60 to $75 per server...now, when I calculated 20% of the wages paid to each person, the largest tip would be $55 for the event captain...and the servers/bartender all calculated to be $40 (except the busser at $20).

My question is are these amounts reasonable tips for banquet servers? I find the $60-$75 to be rather high since they are being paid well and there's already a mandatory service fee. But then again I understand banquet events are different than your standard restaurant service.

Would the servers be offended if I only gave a 20% tip based on their hourly wages?

I would just like to say the only reason why I'm concerned about this is because at this point we are very money conscious because, like the catering bill, everything went way over budget after we signed contracts and all the "extras" were added up. Ugh.

Our reception venue is a restaurant, and they charge 17% gratuity. That seems like a pretty decent amount to me.

    Standard: 25% to captain

    20% to servers and bartenders

15% to kitchen and bar backs

    10% to bussers

This should be of your overall bill and per person.

Outside of the standard "fees" that were attached (I believe gratuity was already included in mine), the wedding coordinator at our venue said the norm for them was anywhere from $20-40 per staff member. She gave me the # of staff there that night, then I multiplied my number by that and brought in cash the day of the wedding.

@JessieJV: Thank you for the breakdown, but I can't afford to tip 25% of our food total...$800 just for the event captain is more than we can afford and does not seem warranted since we are having buffet service, especially when they already charged an 18% service fee and nickeled and dimed us for all the delivery, china and equipment rentals.

I think the $55/40/20 that you calculated sounds reasonable and generous enough, especially if they're getting more than reasonable wages ($20/hour). I personally might bring a little more cash on the wedding day in case they go above and beyond and you choose to tip an additional amount.

Ok.. and do you go up 1 by 1 and tip??? Or do you just add the total up of all tips and hand it to the person in charge ?
