What is a reasonable amount to ask your bridesmaids to pay for hair and makeup?

I have been a bridesmaid several times and fortunately the mother of the bride has paid for hair and makeup (I know I shouldn't expect this) or the bride has given the option of having hair and makeup done or do it yourself. I wear makeup and style my own hair regularly so unless a complicated hairstyle is required, I would prefer to do my own. If the bride insists on bridesmaids having their hair and makeup done what is an acceptable price? I would say $50-$70 for both hair and makeup. I ask because I am about to be in a wedding and the bride has hired a hair stylist and makeup artist to come to the hotel and the price per person is going to be $175-$200! Should hair and makeup cost as much as the bridesmaid dress? Is it appropriate for the bride to expect her wedding party to cover the cost of these professionals coming to the hotel instead of going to a salon?

As a professional makeup artist who has been in the industry for 20 yrs...makeup in salon is about $100-$150. Hair in salon is about $85-$150. These prices reflect ultra high quality and are high end. So total for hair and makeup in salon is about $200.00/person. Im sure there are less exspensive services out there-just check out the quality of services, products used and reputation. You'll want to see pictures and ask other brides about their experience.

Nothing personal to any of the makeup artists out there, but I can buy all brand new quality makeup that will last me 4-5 months for $200! I think if the bride is requiring you to have it done, she should be footing the bill.

I am perfectly capable of doing just about anything to my hair, and don't feel the need to pay to have it done- especially for that price.

I'd talk to her and tell her that is really high. That's more than most people pay for a BM dress!
