What IS a Jack & Jill, exactly?!

I know that it's essentially the bridal shower stag combined, but no one in my family can seem to figure out exactly how to do this. I've told them multiple times that it's bad etiquette for me to really be a part of it at all, but hey times change and they need some help too! lol So, my mom is...

So, my mom is absolutely positive that this is the kind of event that calls for a DJ and a dancefloor. I told her I didn't think anyone would be dancing, and that mixed cds for background music would be fine... but then she assured me people would expect to be dancing. (?!)

My sister says that you charge for tickets, (she mentioned $25) to cover the cost of the hall, the food/catering, decorations, any prizes that may be given out, and then whatever is leftover would go to myself and the groom.

My other sister said that you don't charge for tickets, but that you and the groom register for gifts instead, that way there's something for the guests to see at the event (the opening of the gifts)...

I mean I can probably have a huge party of people our age for $10 a ticket, but I mean, our wedding is only about 100 people, I don't plan on inviting everyone I know, so I was curious about the etiquette of it all, is it different for a jack & jill/stag & doe?

Jack n Jills are for your wedding guests only ... stag n doe is for anyone. And most people DO know that if they are invited to the stag n doe that doesn't mean they are invited to the wedding. Our best man sold a bunch to his friends, people I've never met. Lots of people just wanna party and have a good time. I've actually had A LOT of people buy tickets that aren't even planning on coming. They just wanted to donate money.

It's my understanding that a Jack and Jill is a fundraising event for your wedding. Therefore, you would charge for tickets and it would be an event- music, raffles, games, etc.

At a shower (or a couples shower if you want both sexes there), you would not charge a ticket price and people would purchase you gifts from your registry.

It is generally considered in poor taste to have a Jack and Jill on these forums. You throw the wedding you can afford, it is not up to other people to fund/donate for your wedding.
