What if i don't love my venue anymore?

Reilly, on October 26, 2020 at 7:38 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 15

Hi everyone! My fh and I had to look pretty far from our hometown for wedding venues because of the size of our guest count (he has a massive family). We found a gorgeous historic home and gardens about 2.5 hours away from where we live, right over a different state line. I recently revisited my venue this month to see all the fall foliage in action since we will be having an October wedding. When we originally toured it, it was during the summer time, and the garden spaces and all outdoor landscapes were lush and gorgeous. My fh and I fell head over heels for it and were so excited. We were told availability was filling up already for Fall of 2022 but the date we liked was still available so we booked it pretty far ahead of time, even though it stressed me out a little bit. But now, going back to see it in October, it's like all of the magic is gone. It doesn't even resemble the same place we saw in July, and I am having a really hard time coping with that. I know that seasons change, and outdoor areas change with them, but I didn't consider how different things would be during fall just 2.5 hours away from where I live. More than half of the things I loved about this venue just aren't the same as what I saw before, and I am feeling pretty overwhelmed about it. We put the (pretty hefty) deposit down a little over a month ago, and would only be able to get a quarter of it back. There isn't a lot of availability to move the date earlier, and we didn't really want a summer wedding to begin with. Not sure what to do and would love some input. Thanks you!

What about it is different? Yes, fall is obviously different from summer, but since you picked a fall wedding then I would've thought that was the look you were going with. How does your fiance feel about it?

We booked it for the outdoor gardens and ceremony space! The property has multiple gardens including a boxwood maze, rose garden, and a ceremony lawn that we were really excited about. Where we live, October still is pretty lush, and thing don't really start "dying" until mid November. We thought it would be relatively the same at the venue, but its on a completely different schedule, and the leaves had already mostly fallen, and the gardens had gone pretty much dormant. We just weren't expecting such a drastic change just yet. He see's the differences as well and we were both kind of surprised, but I definitely think it means more to me.

I would try contacting the venue and talk to them. Since you have about two years they might be able to fill that date and give you a refund. The reason they don’t do refunds most of the time is that they aren’t able to fill the date. It’s worth a try. I would start there and see what happens.

I don’t know where your venue is, but we had a really early fall this year where I’m at—so maybe y’all are too. If leaves don’t normally start falling until mid-November, maybe that’ll be the case next year? You could look at the venue’s IG and see if anyone tagged photos of their wedding during fall (or winter since the leaves are already gone) to see how they made it work.

The venue is in Southern PA! Thats a good idea, they don't have a huge social media presence, but I could look and see about reaching out to reviewers! I appreciate it!!

Definitely contact the venue with your concerns. They also might do something with. The trees & other surroundings so it doesn’t look so bare.

For your venue, it sounds like the only way to get the lush look that you really liked is to move the date. Although you mentioned not wanting a summer wedding, you’re obviously unable to get the two things you want at the same time (ie. a Fall wedding AND lush grounds). However, it doesn’t hurt to ask about receiving a higher percentage of your deposit back since the wedding is two years away. Perhaps they’ll be flexible and understanding.

Weather can definitely be drastically different 2.5 hours away. I live about 3 hours from my family and it is generally 10 degrees warmer here than where they live. Had you asked to see photos during the fall?

You've got a good point, I guess I didn't really think about it varying that much. Yes! It is a pretty popular fall venue, I have seen a lot of albums where the scenery looks pretty different some years and then similar to what I experienced others, and the "real weddings" album on their Wedding Wire featured an October wedding around the same time 2 years ago. It looks like a much more mild fall in those photos, and I guess it could be like Haleigh said where it is more harsh some years over others. Next year could be vastly different and so could 2022 unfortunately, but there is a chance it could work in my favor down the line.

I saw you said the wedding is in Southern, PA. Are you Maryland? Because I live Maryland and I'm from PA and the weather can be so different. My hometown could have a foot of snow and Maryland has nothing.

I'm in Delaware! Right near the Maryland border by Ocean City though.

Oh yes that makes total sense why the weather is totally different. Maryland/Delaware is often warmer than Pennsylvania. The warmer weather effects how quickly the trees change color and lose their leaves. I would plan for the worse which means no leaves on the trees. If that isn't the look you want, then I would see if they have an earlier date available.

Hi Reilly! I am in SE PA a little northwest of the city, and my FMIL has a place in Rehoboth, so I feel like I know what you're working with.

Do you feel comfortable being a little more specific about where your venue is - maybe which county? In Montgomery and Delaware counties, I have been stunned by the most gorgeous foliage the last weekend or two. I feel like in most of the southeastern counties, it does stay pretty nice through the end of October (though I can recall at least one year - 2010 or 2011 - where it snowed pretty significantly on October 29th). In that way, it doesn't vary too widely from southern Delaware even though you guys are often a smidge warmer.

That said, weather is a crapshoot. My best friend wanted to get married in February because she loves the snow, and on the day of her wedding it was a quite-out-of-character 60 degrees and warm that day. If your enjoyment of your venue depends on how full the outdoor gardens look, it does sound like you'll be more comfortable exploring your options for something that isn't so dependent on the weather/foliage. Hopefully because we're so far out, they'll allow you out if they can fill the date.

Yes definitely talk to the venue personally. Don't rely solely on the standard language for refunds. They may be willing to work with you since you are booked so far out. If they are as popular as they say they should have no problem filling the date right? I hope they can accommodate your choice. Best wishes!
