What exactly is the sand thing done at ceremonies?

Rebecca, on August 7, 2009 at 8:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

My FI and I met at the beach and he proposed at the beach so naturally everyone told us that we should get married on the beach. I would consider myself somewhat a spiritual person and it meant alot to me to be married in the church I grew up in so the beach wedding idea was never really considered. We were planning on having a unity candle but I keep reading little things about something with sand??? how does that work and what exactly is it??? I was thinking this may be the perfect way to incorporate where it all started for us into our wedding day.

We are doing the unity sand instead of unity candle. Essentially it is the exact same concept. Instead of lighting candles, you will pour sand from separate bottles into a big bottle (that is usually engraved with names/initials/date/symbol). Have you ever seen Sand Art or anything at like fairs or carnivals? One thing to keep in mind, to prevent the sand from mixing all together and keeping it separated into layers (if that's how you want it to look), once you fill it, you have to hold the top close with your thumb and pound it. The sand will settle, so pour more and repeat until it doesn't settle anymore and it's full. but leave enough room for a cork if you are corking it. I used to help an ex's mother do this at county fairs. Because this can take awhile, we are just going to fill it part way then finish the rest after the ceremony. And we are going to have our parents fill it in partway as a sort of "laying the foundation" deal. Here is a link to what we are using:

We are doing the Sand Ceremony as well instead of the Unity Candle. We will incorporate this into the program after we have completed the exchange of vows and rings.

I also want to do a sand ceremony, I think it's a perfect way to show the unity of the two of us! Plus since we are going to be a blended family we are also involving the kids as well!

Here is a site that has some really awesome custom unity sand sets... http://www.sayanythingceramics.com/ceremony-vases.php

We have a big vase and are having all of our guest pour a little big of sand in the vase as they come in and then our officiant will say something about how our family and friends have all shared in our lives and supported us throughout our lives and by including them in our sand ceremony we are asking them to support our marriage and share our lives in the future. The guests will all pour in a little bit of beach sand and then during the ceremony I will pour purple sand and my fh will pour in green sand (on top of the sand our guests have poured).

I thought this was a nice way to include all of our guests in the wedding ceremony. I hope it works out well.

My dad had a beach wedding and i think they chose the sand over the candle because the wind would blow the candles out... but the sand cermony they did looked really nice and they have a lovely keepsake.

Fsuchick97 I really like the idea of having everyone pour in alittle sand. I hadn't heard of the guests being involved before but I really like that.
