What Else Could Go Wrong?!

Brandi, on October 16, 2019 at 5:44 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

I thought being almost a week away from the big day (10/26/19) with all the vendors paid, decorations bought, small details ordered & received, etc etc that these last 10 or so days wouldn't be anything more than dealing w/ guest drama...which has stressed me throughout this entire process...but of course it couldn't be that simple.

So this past Saturday, a building collapsed in downtown New Orleans. I didn't think much of it at the time because I live on the Westbank (about 10-15mins away) & RARELY ever venture downtown. Then, when I was reading updates about the search & rescue efforts for the workers on Tuesday, I realized that the building was only about 2 blocks away from our ceremony venue. The city has evacuated certain areas near the building b/c it didn't fully collapse but is in danger of doing so & they've closed several streets further out, including the street our venue is on. Now, they are on the outer most area of the closure, but still within the closure nonetheless. When I called the information hotline for the city & gave the address of our venue, they said that the street is blocked off from pedestrian & vehicular traffic, but when I called the venue they insisted that there was nothing wrong, they were open & fully operational, & we could carry on biz as usual. They even said the city gave me "false" info & their street was not in fact blocked at all. When I requested to cancel my event (ceremony only) & get a refund b/c of the issues in the area & my concern for my guests' safety, we basically got into a screaming match...it was not my finest moment but I'm sure you can imagine how stressed I am at this point. So for now, my FH & I are going to ride by & scope out the situation for ourselves. I honestly don't want to deal w/ these people AT ALL, but I also LOVE the venue AND don't want to lose the $700 we paid that they have no intention of refunding. *Lesson here I guess is ALWAYS GET WEDDING INSURANCE*

Then to top it all off (yes, there's M O R E Smiley laugh Smiley cry ), my Man of Honor waited until the absolute last minute (today) to send in his tux measurements only to find out the jacket I picked for him doesn't come in his size. He's the only guy standing in my bridal party, so I picked something that would allow him to match the bridesmaids but standout from the groomsmen...well...now he gets to just match the groomsmen. I don't have any more decisions left in me to make. I'M OVER IT! I'M DONE! I GIVE UP!

Oh my goodness! That's a lot of stress so close to the wedding. Is it possible that the street closures cited by the city were for "through traffic" only (ie not local traffic). It sounds like the venue personnel are able to get through, the city probably just wants to limit unnecessary traffic in the area in case of further collapse/emergency services needing to get through. I would wait it out and keep your venue as plan A but start thinking of a back-up in case something happens closer to the day-of. Is this venue for ceremony only or reception too?
If the building is in danger of immediate collapse, it's possible that the city will require a controlled demolition of the remaining structure, or temporary bracing would need to be erected (both of these outcomes would happen pretty soon). (I'm a structural engineer).
As for the tux situation, unfortunately it seems like most bridal parties have at least one straggler who procrastinates their attire. Try to take it in stride, your wedding party will look great regardless!

Sorry! I hope it gets better and it will work out. Unfortunately, yes, taking the drive is best. However, I’m sure the venue may be correct on their business operation. Wishing you the best!

You are almost there so relax and take a deep breath. Everything is going to be fine and stressing it won’t help. I know is easier said than done but trust me it’ll be fine. I think going to the venue is a great idea and hopefully is not in the blocked area and you’re able to do your ceremony there without a problem. I think you should look for a back up plan in case is in fact in the block area.
As for your man of honor that’s not a big deal! Is all about you two so is not a reason to stress. He’ll look handsome regardless.

    Thanks for the encouragement y’all!
    Here’s an update:
We drove by & you can still access the venue from the opposite side of the block (New Orleans is basically a bunch of 1 way streets). I’m going to have to ask the driver to back up down the street (there’s no oncoming traffic since the entrance to the street is blocked) b/c this plus size bride does not want sweat off a face full of make up 😂
I’m really trying not to stress 😩
