What do you wish you DIDN'T buy?

xtine, on April 6, 2017 at 4:56 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 62

My wedding isn't for 16 months and I'm chomping at the bit to start buying stuff! I know I should not do this, since (1) I have a small apartment that's light on storage space, (2) I don't even know what I really need yet, and (3) I've already made a couple of small mistakes (shoes before dress, expensive cake topper, etc.). Meanwhile, I have wish lists and Pinterest boards up the wazoo so I can keep track of everything I like.

For those who are wed (or getting close), did you buy anything early on in your engagement that you regretted purchasing or didn't end up using?

First things first.. get a guest list and a budget set. Find out how much money you're going to need to properly host your guests, ie: appetizers, food, alcohol; what are all of your venues and rentals going to cost. Once you have all of that stuff taken care of, then start worrying about buying other things. I went dress shopping a month after we got engaged and while I won't say that I regret it, because damn I love it, I feel like I jumped the gun a bit and spent a LOT more than I should have on my dress because I didn't have all of the things listed above taken care of.

When I first got engaged, I had NO clue where to start. I don't think I bought anything unnecessary for this reason. Honestly, the WW checklist has helped me out so much.

Only thing was we bought way too many components for our centerpieces. We originally thought we would have more tables but got more declines than expected so I have a full box of martini glasses that wont be used.

I bought a lot of centerpiece items early on. I'm using different teal/blue jars, and I started buying them whenever I saw them cause I guess I was excited.

I do wish I would have waited until I met with the florist and had a little better idea of how many guests we will have. But I do still plan on using a majority of them.

@MrsVoegs17 I should have mentioned that I do have a lot of these things already; budget, venue (provides ceremony space, food, alcohol, rentals, etc), guest list, and quotes for many other vendors. I mostly want to play around with decor but feel like I might end up with a house full of votives and vases that I don't need.

I was in the same boat as @Sara, we bought to many Mason Jars. Other than that, I didn't buy anything really extra for the wedding so there wasn't anything I wished I didn't buy. Maybe the headpiece for my daughter because she refused to wear it.

I originally planned to do my own decor and bought some lanterns and chalkboards. I ended up getting completely? overwhelmed? and hiring a DOC that did the decor as well. I used the lanterns as decor in my house but I'm stuck with the chalkboards.

Veil and veil weights - I did wear my veil for about half of the day but the wind picked up before the ceremony (we got married on a mountain). I was tired of f-ing with it so I took it off.

Garter - I did not have any intention of doing a garter toss (gross) but still wanted one. I lost too much weight before the wedding and it slid right off, hah.

Favors - I absolutely LOVED our favors which were little chocolate boxes shaped like gondolas with truffles inside. I don't regret them per say because they were AWESOME but we spent $1000 on chocolate which in hindsight probably wasn't necessary.

I bought some decor I thought I would use but now I don't want at all. Not a big deal, I can sell it.

A wedding gown. I went dress shopping way too early and purchased a gown that didn't end up being the one. Thankfully I was able to sell it (albeit, heavily discounted).

My veil! It was $200, which is outrageous compared to others I've seen for way less. We got it right after I got engaged and found my dress, it was an "in the moment" thing and my said she's buy it, so I went with it thinking that was how expensive they were.

Had I waited and read WW/Facebook groups longer, I would have known that's not the case!

Two things pretty early on. 1) We paid for an engagement session with a photographer that didn't end up being our wedding photographer. An engagement session is included in our wedding package. 2) I ordered enough STDs for each person instead of each family. Smiley sad

Long engagement here & spend about $140 on stuff we won't be using (champagne glass set, cake knife/server & 13 velvet plates we were going to use for a centerpiece thingy). I did buy candelabras for centerpieces & our weddings rings early on; but these were things we kept going back to over-n-over again. The other stuff was more impulse shopping.

I LOVE my dress; but kinda feel bad for spending that much $ & perhaps should have waited for a DB $99 sale?!?

I wish I didn't buy invitations so early.

I found some really simple invitations on Vistaprint and ordered them last month to take advantage of the 60% off sale.

They're cute, but I think I could've done better. And WPD rose gold foil is still haunting me.

Good news is the invitations I bought were only $30 with RSVP cards so if we decide to get new ones it's not a huge loss.

My flower girls baskets and pillow. I bought them out of excitement and they don't match my wedding at all. Bought em before I chose my colors.

I bought a shit load of those tri fold pocket things for invitations. They were expensive and I'm not gonna use them. I also bought a ton of cake stands which we will also not be using. I know it's hard, but try to wait and see what you'll need.
