What do I do with my hair and makeup for engagement photos?

Clarissa, on May 3, 2017 at 6:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 13

Wondering if it is necessary to have your hair and makeup professionally done for engagement photos? Also, if you did it yourself, could you tell in the photos? Just trying to decide if I should spend the extra money to get it done. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

I think you should save that for the wedding day, engagement photos are more casual and natural.

It's not necessary but I am getting them done. I hardly wear make up and this is a special time. Also, I'm reprinting my photos to use as banners so I want to look flawless

I scheduled my regular haircut on that day so that it would styled. I did end up getting my makeup done, but honestly I wouldn't do it again. I didn't want anything heavy and so it didn't really look much different than what I do at home.

I had my makeup done by a friend of mine who works for MAC. She has done my makeup a couple times before and will be doing my wedding makeup. I curled my hair myself.

Thank you! I considered doing my own hair but am clueless when it comes to makeup. Where do youeven go? A salon where you get your hair done?

I got my hair cut and blow dried. My hair salon also has a makeup artist but if not I would have gone to the cosmetics counter at Macy's, bought some makeup, and had them do my makeup.

I can do my day to day makeup and hair decently, but I wasn't sure how it would photograph. I wanted to feel and look my best for my pictures, so I opted for a bit of pampering.

    Edit: clarity

I am actually using the day of my engagement pictures to do my 'makeup trial'. So it's kind of a dual purpose! I don't think I will be doing a hair trial though b/c I don't want my engagement pictures to look identical to my wedding photos minus the dress...

I had mine done and loved it. I don't usually do much with my hair and makeup, so it was great having it done professionally so it looked nice and lasted all day. I'll also say that it was less expensive than I thought ($80 before tip), so it's definitely worth looking into.

I did my own hair and make up for my engagement pictures, and they turned out great, despite the rain. If you trust your capabilities, then I say go for it. However, if you think you're going to regret it, then I wouldn't risk it, as these are professional photos and pick up every detail. Also, like PPs have said, you could get your make up trial done for your engagement photos to knock two things out of the way!

Also, some salon shops have MUA in the shop, but you could search online for MUA in your area. If there is a Sephora, MAC, or Ulta in your area, you could start there. Unless I know someone who works in those stores, I usually don't get my make up done there.

    Good luck!

Do you typically wear makeup? I think its fine to do your own if you wear it regularly and are comfortable with applying it - most people know how to wear makeup for special occasions and layer it on a bit more than you would for every-day (it will show up better in pictures). I do wish, in hindsight, I had worn fake lashes but that's just me Smiley smile Don't forget to paint your nails, too!

You don't have to, don't overthink this.

I got mine done at Sephora. You get it for free if you buy $50 in products. So I went to get my makeup, bought a few of the products she used, and got the rest as a gift card. I happened to need a haircut so I went to the salon and they styled there as part of the cut. But I also am hopeless with makeup and know it should be heavier for photos so it was very worth it to me.
