What crystals to add on wedding dress? HELP!

Arena, on December 30, 2014 at 1:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 15

I want more high quality crystals on my wedding dress, so I went to David's Bridal and they told me to go buy the crystals myself on my own and I went to Michaels and bought some. DB later helped pick out what was good and wasn't, but I want your opinions as well.

This is my wedding dress:

This is what I want the bodice to look like:

These are the crystals I bought:

Silver - https://www.etsy.com/listing/112853722/24-crystal-cal-2x-swarovski-crystalss?ref=market

Clear - http://s38.photobucket.com/user/arenaskies/media/20141229_153933.jpg.html?filters[user]=13144497&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=1

ALL are sewn on. No flat ironing, DB said it's too risky. What do you think? Any crafting advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks, Rosemary! But it depends on the location. I called one and they said they won't sew it on. I have no clue why, but that person probably was new or something.

They charge $1 per bead, so it can get pricey, but it's worth it if you want more! You can basically customize your own dress in some way. DB tends to have poor quality crystals, so you can liven it up a bit.

I'm sorry, but I can't get my mind around "high quality crystals" & "Michaels." I personally would stay away from this with a ten foot pole, unless you can hire a professional (not DB), and that will cost probably as much as the dang dress in the first place.

M, what's the basis on your doubts? These are swarovski crystals, doesn't matter if Michaels sells it, ebay, or the local boutique. It's a good quality brand used on wedding dresses all the time.

If DB messes up, which is a possibility, then they can replace the dress at no cost. If I went to another boutique and they messed up, the dress cannot be replaced. I'd have to buy another one.

Did you have a bad experience with DB or something?

No, i just wouldn't trust hardly anyone to add crystals to my vision, even a very very high-end tailor, so going to DB seems dubious.

There's just the element of design, if you don't have a professional designer in the mix,k you can try all you like, but it's doubtful it will ever look exactly as you had pictured it.

I'm just not one for risks.

I appreciate the input and understand, but I'm willing to take the risk. Worst comes to worst, I replace the dress at no cost, but I lose $300 for the alteration, which is okay to me. It may not be for some, but I'm willing to take the risk.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to look exactly like that picture I posted, but if it's somewhat close to it, I'll be happy.

I just wanted to know if I picked the right crystals. Some say silver makes the dress look dirty, others say it looks nice. Whether I should get AB crystals or not. Things like that.

If the dress turns out great or a disaster, I'll know in a couple months!

Before you put a lot of the crystals on, take a photo. I know there was a bride on here who said that in photos, her clear crystals looked black.

Shoot! I forgot to take photos. When I go back after buying more crystals, I'll definitely do that.

I make jewelry and this is where I get my swarovskis from. It would probably end up cheaper than micheals. www.artbeads.com I like just the plain clear and not the AB but that's just my personal preference.

How do you replace the dress at no cost? I'd go to a well known tailor to have those added on.

Anne, have you seen the Sophia Tolli in person? I'm asking because her gowns tends to have more (having a challenge describing what I mean) rhinestone like crystals, flat on one side to achieve that jeweled encrusted look. The ones you purchased look more like beaded round crystals for making jewelry and things. Just concerned you might not get the look you are going for.

Hey, I'm sure your dress will turn out beautifully, even if it's not exactly like the designer dress pictured! Sewing beads on isn't that difficult, just terribly time-consuming. If DB offer the service and are willing to replace your dress if it doesn't come out nicely I'm sure they have enough experience to do a good job. I don't know where you live, but you might want to see if there are any real (not Jo-annes) dress-making or trimmings shops in your area. In my experience the quality and price is always better at these specialty stores.

I also second the advice to take flash photos of the beads and see how they look.

I went out and bought new crystals since I took photos of the dress and they looked a little dark. I'll post it shortly.

This is the picture of the dress on the front. We just splayed out some crystals. I'm changing the silver ones though because they're a little too dark, but other than that, I think it's going to look nice Smiley smile Tell me what you think.
