What can i do to fix my wide torso?

The Sealpups, on August 12, 2019 at 10:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
I’m small/short, 5’1. Had PCOS & hypothyroid and was lucky enough to reverse it with keto since last year (before I was engaged). I’m a bit curvy and have lost tummy fat. (Thanks to my PCOS, I looked pregnant with the belly but now it’s a little chubby but flat. I’m fine with it). Anyhoo, I have a mermaid dress and I can’t help but feel like my torso looks so big and wide. I have spanx underneath but don’t know if there’s anything else I can do. When I initially tried it on, it looks great! But with these fittings, the stomach area looks weird, right? I can’t put my finger on it.

Please be very honest. I’m not fishing for compliments at all. There seems to be something different about the dress from when I first wore it (which I’m sure was the sample dress) to my dress.

Sample dress:

It looks like it needs to be taken in around your waist. Maybe the sample was clipped to where it hugged your curves better, but it doesn’t look like your actual gown is doing the same.

I agree that’s a drastic difference on how the dress looks on you. Talk to your alterations department about it, it definitely needs to be tighter around the waist. Did they order you a larger size so they could take it in?

Yeah, they ordered a way different size than the sample because my measurements were all over the place. I honestly would’ve preferred the sample dress and have them do alterations from that

Tell the alterations department about it, try the sample dress on again and tell the shop that you want your dress to fit like the sample. I’m not a seamstress so I don’t know the cost for this, I also don’t know if your dress has boning. They ordered your dress larger with the intention of taking it in, I’m sure they can fit it to you properly.
If they can’t give you what you asked you can also shop around for an independent seamstress. I’m sure your dress will be ok! If it makes you feel any better my dress made me look like a short stubby cupcake until my seamstress gave me a waist again. They can work miracles.

I agree, it's not hugging you correctly around your waist. How does the hip area feel? It looks ok to me but you may prefer it tighter? I wouldn't go too tight though cuz you want to be able to sit. The bust looks like it fits and doesn't need to be taken in any more.

I actually think you look way better in the actual dress than the sample. I don't find the way the sample sits on you flattering. I do think the actual dress can be fitted better in the bust and hips, which the seamstress can do. I think if you show the seamstress what you like about the first photo they can recreate it.
It's a gorgeous dress you're going to look beautiful when it's done being fitted.

Definitely work with a seamstress. It looks like the actual dress is sitting a bit lower on you and probably isn't as fitted in the waist to hold it up.

I'm 5'1 with a short torso and poorly defined waist. I bought a mermaid and with a high belt it looks like I have a waist. Maybe you can try that.
