What are you serving for drinks/cocktail hour?

Emily, on June 26, 2019 at 10:44 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6
Hi all, we have a caterer doing our main meal and have people to man the food and bar during our reception. But our venue allows us to provide our own alcohol and the snacks for cocktail hour. What kinds of drinks are you serving? We can't afford a full blown open bar and planned to have a couple types of wine and some kegs and a couple signature drinks. What kind of beer are you getting for your guests, any great signature drinks you know are popular, recipes, what items are you serving? I am just looking to think outside the box and what I like may not be in line with what guests may like. Would just love some ideas. Smiley smile

We did our own cocktail hour but I called it a snack break since there weren't any cocktails or alcohol aha. I served boba in drink dispensers and for snacks we had church ladies volunteer to make us food so there were platters of fruit, mini muffins, egg rolls, and a couple other things.
My advice is try to go simple with this. you can buy a ton of cheap cookies or cheese platters or something. It's just meant to be a little time for people to mingle and snack you don't have to go all out for it. You can even do no alcohol and just have a drink station like lemonade and infused water or whatever you like to drink. My husband was dead set on us having a boba station because that's what he loves. So you can even think about what kind of things you yourself love like people do coffee stations and what not

So simple, so cheap. I'm doing a nacho bar but I can't bring outside food in so it's through the caterer. Chips and dip and cheese go good with wine and beer

We were advised against getting kegs because you have to keep them cold and you can’t return any unused amounts for a refund like you may be able to do with extra bottles. As far as types of beer, I think it just depends on your crowd. My FH and his friends all love Breckenridge Brewery, and since we’re getting married near Breckenridge it makes sense to get FH’s favorite: Agave Wheat. I’m not big on beer, so I’ll leave it up to him what other options we should have, but we are only having a max of about 60 guests.
For signature drinks, my thoughts are to do a large batch of margaritas, rum punch, and/or sangria. We won’t have bartenders and to me large batches just seem easier than mix your own with different alcohol options and mixer options.

For signature drinks, I’d do one with champagne so that way you’ll have Champagne (or Prosecco is fine and often cheaper) as one of the wine options anyway so there’s no waste. Typically, the Blushing Bride drink is made with Champagne, peach schnapps & grenadine but you can look at other recipe variations online.

We are going to have an assortment of quality bottled beer and tons of wine (Red, White, Rose, etc.).

If you really want to offer signature drinks (beyond beer & wine which is fine), in addition to or instead of the Blushing Bride you could do His/Her cocktails using the same alcohol base to avoid waste. Maybe choose vodka for example and make His/Her or Mr & Mrs Martinis. Maybe a cosmo for you & lemondrop martini for your fiancé? There are so many martini flavors you can even choose ones for your color scheme: yellow, green, blue, red, pink. Google martini recipes. 🍸
