What are some activities for the wedding reception to help fill the time?

Ashley, on October 15, 2020 at 11:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

We are having our wedding on Saturday, November 14. We have our venue for five hours as part of their standard package but are having difficulty figuring out what to fill that time up with. Our reception is from 1 pm to 6 pm. We were thinking of having a two hour cocktail from 1 pm to 3 pm to begin with to give folks enough time to have drinks and appetizers and socialize. This also gives the bridal party enough time to take ample pictures around the premises. Our challenge is figuring out what to do in an indoors venue from 3 pm to 6 pm. Due to COVID-19, we have restrictions in place like no dance floor and no performances other than first dance. We have a DJ playing music and we will have a Photo Booth where people can take group photos. In addition to this I was thinking about hiring one or two caricature artists for our guests.

Here are my questions:

1) Is a two hour cocktail too long? Would guests start to get bored? I am planning on seating everyone with their relatives or social circles.

2) Other than our entrances, first dance, and a couple of speeches, what are some other fun things to help pass the time? Do you have any ideas for games that are good for crowds/groups (maybe team ones) but aren't super tacky?

3) Anything else that I can do to help the time pass?

We’ve hired someone to host paint nite since dancing isn’t allowed. We’ll have ~30 guests so may or may not be a suitable activity based on the size of your guest list.

A 2 hr cocktail hour is usually not recommended but given your situation, I think it's doable. Typically if there is no dancing, people mingle and catch up the entire time, and they can chat for hours, especially if they haven't seen each other recently. Adults know how to entertain themselves so I wouldn't worry. I would steer clear of games because you don't want it to feel like a company retreat. Best of luck!

That is such a fun idea! We have about 100 guests so not doable in our case, but if I ever do a smaller gathering in the future, that would be a great option. Thank you for the insight!

That's a good point, I always hated those forced team icebreakers LOL. I'll try my best to just leave the time for people to socialize and relax.

Do you have any favourite board games? A board game table could be fun.

I agree with this. In my culture we don't usually have dancing, but there is Mahjong, haha. Otherwise, it's eating, talking, speeches etc. Mind you, we also serve a minimum of 8/9courses so not much time to dance. 😂

You could always do a trivia game! Put together trivia questions about you and your fiance, give guests until after dinner to fill out the answers, and come up with a prize for the winner of each table.

2 hours for the cocktail hour is a bit long, you don't want your guests to get restless or load up on alcohol! I think the trivia game idea listed above is fun! You could do questions pertaining to you and your partner and hand out prizes! If you're able to do teams for the trivia, it would be a fun ice breaker for guests that don't know one another well.

That along with the photo booth would be a good pair to help pass some time!

A 2 hour cocktail hour is too long. You could play the shoe game or trivia like others have suggested. Are you allowed to have a photo booth? That would be fun for guests.

I am incorporating a cigar roller and psychic into my night as little activities people can be interactive with, also maybe a whiskey tasting table with an expert could be fun. Photo booths are always a hit also!

A 2 hour cocktail hour is to long. People get bored and just want to see the bride and groom. Maybe set up corn hole or board games. You could do bride and groom trivia games.
