What amount of gap time is acceptable between ceremony and reception? Set reception at different time Yay or Nay?

May bride here a little stressed. My fiance and I found a venue for our reception at the last minute. We signed contract and paid deposit over the weekend. We are getting married on the beach which is (10 miles) 18 minutes away from the venue. This is awesome news for us and the guests. Considering some are flying in and others are driving over a hour to get the beach to attend we are excited to find a place that is extremely close to do the reception.

Here is our biggest dilemma:

5 months ago we booked the only botanical garden in the area to take secondary pictures after our ceremony is over. We originally planned to take photos at the beach with guests and then go off to the botanical garden alone for further pictures. The problem is the garden is a hour away from the beach and and now 45 min from the new venue we just booked. which means we would leave the guests for quite a long time before arriving at the venue. Is it a rule of thumb that the couple do not miss the entire cocktail hour. I am a little frustrated in one sense about this. Also would I be able to word the invitations in such a way that the reception will actually start 2 hours later. Looking for a little feedback here.

P.S. It only 20 guests for my wedding.

No dont apologize. I came for feedback and i appreciate all of you for just that. i will get my refund because as i mentioned the venue is literally 10 min from the beach so that is perfect as far the guest is concerned no far to drive except from home of course. its just my fiance and I has to find a secondary spot to do photos because we are not doing a first look.

Honestly? Most of the weddings I’ve been to don’t have a cocktail hour. We’re planning one for our guests, but our venue is both the ceremony space and reception space. I’ve waited as much as 3 hours without a cocktail hour for a reception (in the same space as the ceremony), it was irritating, but I waited for them because I love them. That being said, I would talk to my guests. Since it’s only 20 people, they might have a different opinion about it. Also, perhaps you could see about moving the botanical to another day and taking some newlywed photos if you’re concerned.

Okay so I'm just going to put this out there. I don't know how many people on this page are Catholic but this is a fairly common thing in Catholic circles because you can't get married after 2:30 or so and receptions often don't start until 5. It depends on your crowd but if you're in a cool little town to explore, I would be fine with it.

Right, but my point is it's not a completely unheard of thing. It's a gap, people will adapt.

I just had an idea! You said it’s a small group. Is there any way for can pay for everyone to take some type of tour? Like a bus tour or something? That would take up a little bit of time and then 1.5hrs for cocktail hr. If you could fit that into your budget I think that would be a great way to make it work.
And be sure to take as many pictures you can before the ceremony to cut down the gap.

Looking at it this way, you're gonna be out for at least four hours or more if I'm gonna be honest, this is taking into account potential traffic issues, and knowing how long your photographer is going to take to take these photos. I honestly recommend doing a first look instead at the botanical garden because at the very least, your guests won't be spending a long time without the main attraction. I'll be honest, if I was a guest and I knew I had to wait potentially four hours without the main stars, I would just leave right after, even if there's food.

🙌🏼🙌🏼 Thank goodness I wasn’t the only one thinking this! I was almost starting to feel bad for the 3 hour gap we have.
