What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding now?

Take you time! Don't get caught up in trends or having a theme, talk to your FS about what YOU want first and foremost. Then find things that mesh with that.

Also guest list first! Be on the same page about size of the wedding, and have your budget and guest number (if not list) down before everything else.

On a more personal note, make everything possible fun! Stuffing envelopes, picking flowers/cake, and make time for your FS outside of wedding planning. It is so so easy to get caught up in planning, and neglect the spouse, especially if they aren't as into planning.

Go to courthouse instead lol

Keep it VERY small, or elope. LOL. Seriously though.
