We've decided on a NYC City Hall wedding. Now...reception?

Any restaurant recommendations? I'm well-versed in city dining, but I wouldn't know anything about reserving a whole restaurant or a private area. Should I do just a simple dinner, or dinner with entertainment? Should our wedding party give speeches? Should we show slides of our baby pictures? What is usually done?

There's a nice rehearsal dinner that I've been to that had no music, just speeches given by family and friends, and a slideshow of the bride and groom. I think that's a simple and nice way to do it? Is there something else I should be thinking of?

Does anyone know what's a good price for food and open bar per head? Not the super fancy restaurants, we like rustic and cozy. I know they can run expensive. I'm looking at restaurants like Nom Wah ($5500 for 50 people, open bar included), Public, Hill Country. Although the latter two I suspect are out of my budget. Ideally I wouldn't want to spend more than a few thousand for 50-60 guests.

I completely love public, and I've done several weddings there. Look at Il Buco, City Hall (the restaurant, not the office, lol). You might also look at restaurants in Chinatown, which is literally within walking distance of City Hall (the office, not the restaurant....) There is also the Bowery Hotel, the Nomad, Gramercy Hotel and the Library Hotel, all of them have private rooms.

I think you can do anything you want; speeches, background music, anything.

@Celia City Hall the restaurant is no longer open! I can find my way around Chinatown with my eyes closed, but no other place has the right vibe I think, unless there's some place that I haven't found. Restaurants like Golden Unicorn or Congee Village might be interesting for non-Chinese, but as a Chinese person restaurants like those are incredibly tacky. Nom Wah is the only place that's somewhat cute and historical, but when I called their attitude was terrible and I'm not sure if I want to work with them.

We personally love Carmines (italiam family style) and they definitely have a private area.

You know, someone told me that about City Hall, but I couldn't confirm it. That is really sad, it was so cool..... we did a lot of weddings there; it was a shoe factory in another life!

Would you consider NJ? I have some great place right on the Hudson....

@Amy, getting married in Central Park? The boat house? Or are you doing a small ceremony there somewhere?

Just a PSA; to get married at a specific place in Central Park, you need a permit.
