Welch’s or Welchs or Welches??

#WhenYouWishUponAWelch, on May 30, 2018 at 4:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 36
Hello WW!

My FH and I will be getting our engagement photos done tomorrow (yay!) and we are painting a wooden sign with his last name(my future) and est. July 13, 2019. It will read “The Welch’s est. July 13, 2019”
or that was the plan. Then FMIL pointed out that the apostrophe S suggests possessive so we should write Welches. But adding the E seems wrong to me and I feel like it should be Welchs or Welch’s. Any opinions or advice? Now I’m questioning it all...

Also this points out that family names ending in ch should have the ES? 😕😕

I agree with FMIL about it sounding possessive, but I wouldn't add the 'e' like she suggested. I would go with "The Welchs". My FH's last name is Hornsby, and we will be writing "The Hornsbys est. 2019".

She is definitely right about it being possessive, I didnt think about that until she said it. But yea, the E seems wrong to me. Its like a different name as opposed to the plural in my opinion

Oh, I need to follow this! I'm to be a Collins and while I believe we'll be the Collinses and things we own will belong to the Collins', I'm always bad at this. (In my defense I was verbal very early and don't do well with grammar rules you can't hear in speech.)

My concern is that it makes people think that your last name is Welchs instead of Welch. I would have the same issue with FH last name and would probably use the apostrophe because even though it's not correct grammar wise you are setting yourselves up for people misinterpreting your last name. IE: I have a friend with the last name Adam and everyone calls them Adams and it drives them nuts. I assume if people see this sign they will assume the last name is Welchs/Welches.

The -es is grammatically correct, whether it feels right or not. The apostrophe is absolutely incorrect.

It would be the Welches. Follow the grammar tips that you found and posted.

Agreed. Whenever a word ending in -ch is plural, you ad -es to the end to make it so.

Last names usually follow grammar rules as well!

This sounds right to me only if it's "The Welches", which may be what you want to do to avoid all of the argument.

So I think we are just deciding to remake the sign saying “Eric + Lauren Welch est. July 13, 2019” lol. Clears all that “s” nonsense right up

It would be clear to anyone who understands plural words.

You could avoid the whole thing and have a sign that says The Welch Family.

I don’t think that’s a legitimate concern at all. In the Adam/Adams example, people are just assuming Adams because that is a common last name, and Adam is not. People default to the thing they know and it doesn’t have anything really to do with that S (examples: I have a Liebman friend who is mistakenly called Lieberman ALL the time. And a Costantine who is always called Constantine)...so people are always going to presume Welch (a moderately common name) as opposed to thinking your personal last name is Welches - a surname which may possibly exist but I have never heard of. If it’s “The Welches” it is super clear you’re talking about Mr and Mrs Welch, though possibly *someone* might be unsure if it’s Welch or Welche, no one will think you are Mrs Welches based on that.

its one thing to omit the E, but the apostrophe is pretty cringeworthily wrong.

Hello! Adding an apostrophe would make it possessive, so the correct way would be to add the "es!" However, for the creative way in which you're using it, I don't think that really matters! After all, you both could be showing possession of your marriage! Like, "we own this!" Smiley smile
