Weight loss saboteurs: Stress & Overcoming pms Hunger?

Christy, on December 2, 2021 at 7:32 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 8
My wedding isn’t until April, but I’m trying to drop 5 lbs by my 1st dress fitting in end of January. I know what my “feel great” weight is & I don’t usually have a hard time maintaining that weight, but the stress of returning to normal life after Covid caused me to gain 5 stubborn lbs since July. I realize that may sound trivial to some, but I’m usually a very healthy eater (opting for whole foods except on special occasions), & eating well makes me happy. However, I’ve been so much busier post-Covid that I find I don’t have the energy at the end of the day to take care of myself. That’s when I tend to blow an entire day’s worth of smart choices (choices that aren’t usually difficult for me to make). PMS exhausts me even more and I become RAVENOUS, which means any progress I may have made is lost EVERY MONTH! And I feel so much more stressed when I eat poorly…so it’s a vicious cycle 😭

Anyone have tips that have helped them get through extreme stress & PMS hunger? I feel like if I can just get back on track I’ll be fine, but it seems like I have forgotten what works for me (if that makes any sense).

GIRL!! This is my exact same situation! In the past I’ve been great at maintaining with overall healthy choices and sometimes indulging on special occasions, idk what is up with my body since COVID but the 5 extra pounds will not come off!!
I’m sorry I don’t have advice for you or myself but I can TOTALLY relate!
I think the only thing we can really tell ourselves is that honestly we’re probably the only ones that notice it on ourselves. But if you find anything that works, please let me know!

I’m glad (& sorry 😂) you can relate! I am not really worried about appearances. My dress fits (although there is definitely no room for growth) & honestly the 5 lbs would only make a difference for my MOH when she’s trying to zip up the dress lol. I tried the dress on in October & it made me nervous when it took some maneuvering to get the zipper up. I think a 5 lbs loss would help. My main goal is to feel my best & I know what that looks like for me. (It doesn’t look like polishing off a sleeve of crackers at 5:00 every afternoon 😂).

Ah yes, good old PMS and stress eating. Normally when I feel like I'm getting on a snack kick I'll make sure I limit the amount of them I have with me when I'm most likely to snack. I usually will eat junk while I'm sitting at my desk at work, so while I'll allow myself to have some chocolate, i don't keep the bag at work. I'll keep it at home and pack 1 or 2 pieces in my lunchbox to take with me and then that's my limit for the day.

I feel like those cravings get so much worse if you tell yourself you can't have any, so allowing myself to have a few pieces, sometimes even a couple more than I should, will keep me from crazy overeating and helps more in the long run. Overall though, your dress does fit and will zip, so even if you can't lose the 5lbs you're hoping for, that's totally okay too!

Thanks Jessi! I don’t normally get specific cravings (at least any that I’ve been able to identify). I just feel like a bottomless pit. Mini meals & snacking seems to make it worse (although that doesn’t stop me lately). I think I’m probably dealing with a stress-induced hormonal imbalance. I’ve dealt with that before, but unfortunately I’m really struggling to manage my stress during the last 4 months. I’m thinking it may be time to carve out some time for meditation & therapy.

I got diagnosed with Hashimotos in April of last year and put on 25lbs. I've managed to work 15 of it off since then but am struggling with the last ten so I know how you feel!

I exercise 4 times a week (at least 30 mins of cardio then a HIIT workout)

I eat a very low carb diet- not perse keto because I don't eat a ton of fat. Just under 25g of net carbs a day and high protein.

I've also stopped purchasing my favorite snack items because I know I can't control myself with them.

Ahhh PMS is the worst lol!

What has REALLY helped me and my husband on eating healthier is not having junk food at the house at ALL. We started this since last year and since then we BARELY bring home or shop for chips, chocolates, etc. Every now and then yes, but it's kind of rare. And because of this, it has changed my eating habits and I am just more mindful on what I like to eat now.

Another thing that really helps us is meal prepping. To avoid from eating out we designate one day to meal prepping for the week. You can do breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, we have just do lunches, and I just make sure to cook us a somewhat healthy dinner.

Lastly, I have been doing intermittent fasting for months now and I like it Smiley smile So, I would not eat in the AM until lunch time. I do still have my moments where I am STARVING in the morning, so I will make sure to eat. So, I always make sure to listen to my body. If I need food, I will eat food.

I used to keep a food journal just to see what I used to eat back then and boy did I do a lot of take out Smiley ups . So, maybe keep a food journal and see what changes you can make.

Bottom line is all you can do is TRY! If you don't try then you won't get anywhere right? You got this!! Smiley smile

Chew gum when you want to snack. Helps me at work!
