Weight Loss & Dress Alterations

Shannon Marie, on December 20, 2016 at 10:22 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 14

When shopping for your dress and on a path to loose a good amount of weight before the wedding, what do you do? Size down? Hope that alterations can be made in time and properly with the dress you fall in love with?

Just curious what you gals think or have experienced !

I lost 20 lbs before my first dress appointment. When I was measured, I asked to go one size down from what I was currently at. I know I can lose at least one size, but if I am able to keep up with my diet and exercise, I will loae much more than that. In that case, I will have things taken in in alterations.

Know your body. If you have any doubt about losing the weight, it is better to order the size you are and they can always alter it smaller.

I'm planning to lose weight as well but ordered the correct size. It's easier for them to take the dress in vs letting it out.

Order for the size that you are right now. As @Dreaming said, it's always easier to take a dress in than let it out. Though a rule of thumb is that depending on the dress silhouette, you typically can take a dress down 2-3 sizes without losing its integrity.

I ordered my fit n flare in April for the size I was measured at. I knew I WANTED to lose the weight, I just didn't know a)if I would actually do it and b)how much I would lose...so regardless I wanted my dress to fit if I didn't lose at all, worst case. I ultimately ended up dropping 45 lbs before the wedding day and my seamstress had no problem altering it down.

I plan on losing a significant amount and went in planning to order the dress a couple sizes too small. That was not recommended, as I knew it wouldn't be, and I was talked into ordering the dress in my size at the time. I spoke with the seamstress and was assured that the dress could be taken in as much as needed. The dress has 4 seams so I guess it's possible. I would just let your sales associate know what your plan is before she starts pulling dresses.

Much easier to take a gown in than to let it out! Order the size you are now.

I lost 50 lbs between purchasing my dress and the wedding. The seamstress was able to take in the dress just fine. My dress did have a corset back which probably helped.

I bought my dress too small by accident. I bought it online. Iv spent the past couple of months eating only soup and fruit and yogurts and working out relentlessly at the gym. I have lost 5 inches and can now fasten my dress but still have back fat Smiley sad don't make the same mistake. Buy a dress that fits and save yourself the stress. This is a pic of the back fat issues in stuck with for my wedding. Remembering in 5 inches smaller in the chest and waist than I was a couple of months back

I had questions about this and the owner of the boutique where I ordered my dress, ordered my size and told me alterations can be made if needed. She said alterations wise, it is easier to take in dress than it is to let out a dress.

I was measured for my dress back in the summer. My seamstress made my dress and when I went for my fitting last weekend she had to take it in 4 inches on each side! Working out and eating clean definitely works! But always get the dress made/buy the dress for the size you are at the time of purchase! It can ALWAYS be taken in but not necessarily made bigger! T-23 days!!!

I had lost 50 lbs before going dress shopping so I knew I was capable of loosing a large amount of weight. At the time that I ordered my dress I knew I wanted to loose an additional 30-40 lbs but I still ordered what size fit me at the time, a 14. Three weeks ago, and another 20 lbs later, I tried on the size 14 size and it fell to the floor even while zipped. I went back to the store an requested to order it in a smaller size because I didn't want to have to make drastic alterations since the dress is very detailed. They took my measurements, my bust and waist measured as an 8 and the hips measured a 12. I ordered the 12 and even though its just one size smaller it fits perfect around my hips, I'll just have to get the top taken in. Moral of he story is ORDER WHAT FITS YOU, better to be safe than sorry.

Congratulations on your amazing progress so far !!! That’s incredible ! I wound up losing around 45 when wedding time came. Definitely had my fair share of alterations but it was so doable and such a seamless process ! Definitely do what you feel is best but I’m glad i didn’t size down when I ordered and instead ordered for exactly where my body was at that time. It motivated me to be healthier for myself !

Has anyone lost MORE than 50 pounds before having your dress altered! I’m at 50 now and I’m not sure if I should continue with my goal, or hold off! I can’t afford a new dress so that’s not an option!
