Weight Loss and Wedding Gowns

Jasmine, on July 19, 2020 at 7:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Hey Everyone! I hope quarantine has been nice to all of you.

So I have a tricky question, I purchased my gown literally right before COVID shut down everything. I bought the gown at the suggested size, however I surprisingly dropped 20+lbs during quarantine, and my body is still dropping. (Dropped hormonal BC).

I'm looking for advise, I think

At what point would you just buy a new gown?

How much weight can you lose and the gown still be able to be altered?

Thanks you!

P.S.

If this is in the wrong category, lemme know so I can repost/change it.

Maintaining during COVID as much as possible. I believe you can loose up to 15lbs for a dress to still fit properly before having to buy another dress. I would contact a alteration shop to verify. My lady told me not to lose to much weight.

I think it depends on the dress. My daughter in law lost 30 and still kept her dress. Contact an alterations person and have them tell you what to do after they see it on you.

It depends on the dress! Also everyone loses weight differently so what is dropping multiple dress sizes for one person isn’t for another even with the same amount of weight lost. I would definitely ask your seamstress because they are the only one who would be able to give you an answer.

I will be contacting her tomorrow, thanks everyone!

It's a mermaid so I'm hoping, just hoping it'll work out.

It’s pretty common for brides to lose weight right before the big day, or so my seamstress says lol...and I can tell. My dress is starting to fit loosely. I go in for alterations in August.

I lost over 30lbs and kept my dress. I believe it really does depend on your dress and what your seamstress can do. Thankfully since I had a full skirt, it was mostly my bodice that needed work.

From what I was told it really depends on the dress. When I picked up mine just as COVID started in Las Vegas I asked the shop owner about weight loss. My particular dress (ball gown) can accommodate a decent amount of weight loss. I am hoping for 40ish and they said that would be easy to do.

This question can't be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no' because there are a few things to consider such as; has your body changed significantly since losing weight, or are you just a slimmer version of yourself? is the dress one that can easily be altered (i.e. elaborately beaded dresses are VERY expensive to alter and some can't even be changed all that much)? have you the budget for a new dress? are you happy with the dress now that you've lost weight?

Some dresses can be taken in as much as 2 sizes, however it really depends on the dress itself and what type of alterations you'd need.

You need to talk to your seamstress. She is going to be able to tell you what she is capable of doing with the dress.

I’ve been so tempted to try mine on but I found some pounds during the lockdown and despite working out and toning up, the scale hasn’t moved. I’m hoping it still fits (with its 27 buttons 😳)
Also, i hadn’t taken going off bc into consideration when it came to weight. I hope I don’t lose too much before the wedding. I’m not coming off mine until a month after alterations....

It probably depends on how the dress is currently fitting now, as to whether it can be properly altered.

There's really no cut and dry answer here, unfortunately. It depends on the dress (structure, how intricate it is, etc.), the experience of the seamstress, and how you lose weight as an individual. You'll need to take it in to have someone look at it to see if they can do it. If they say no, try a couple others before you buy a whole new dress, just because some seamstresses are more or less comfortable with different styles.

My suggestion is find a great seamstress and you should be fine.
