Weight loss and wedding dresses

Carrie, on February 27, 2020 at 1:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
Hello All! My wedding is August 8th so about 5 months away. I would like to loose about 20 pounds. Can I go dress shopping before the weight loss occurs?

This is tricky! I bought my dress before losing weight, and it did not zip all the way. Now I’m 50-something days away and although I’m sticking to my exercise and diet plan I still don’t fit my purchased dress. Sooo I’m buying a back up (the back up is cheaper than getting the original dress taken out). So in my case I kind of wish I would have waited to purchase til around now. But there are so many dress options nowadays that this isn’t so cut and dry. I’m able to buy 2 dresses for less than $1500 (first one was purchased from NearlyNewlywed.com and second from BHLDN.com). But if you have a super tight budget you def want to be sure your first purchase is your only purchase.

If your wedding is 5 months away you should go shopping now because dresses can take a long time to come in.

Yes! Go dress shopping ASAP! Unless you’re buying an off the rack dress, many dresses can take 8-10 months to arrive. So time is not on your side. I would buy a dress in your current size, but continue to work on your weight loss goals. A seamstress will be able to alter your gown with no problems.

In addition to my first statement you could always buy a dress a size down if you have a predicted size but then you definitely need to be sure that you stick to your weight loss goal. A friend of mine said that it's more money to have a dress taken out rather than taken in.

My wedding is August 8th as well and I got my dress in January, just get a dress now and alter it later!

I would be very careful, my bridal boutique advised me last week that dresses are taking upwards of 6 months to deliver because of the coronavirus. Our wedding is in October.
I’d order a dress in your size now and then have it taken in to accommodate your weight loss (this is what I’m doing too).

Girl, go get your dress now!! Some designers take 8-10 months to arrive... and with the coronavirus outbreak, they are estimating 90% of all wedding dresses will be delayed even further! I would go to a bridal salon and tell them your date and have them pick out dresses they know can arrive in time. You could also purchase a sample dress off the floor. I would highly suggest just purchasing a dress that fits the size you are now. There is no telling whether or not you will actually lose weight, and you do not want a dress that is too small for you. Buy the dress that fits now and if you lose weight, a seamstress can take it in. Good luck & happy shopping!

Yes! It's way easier to alter to a smaller size than a bigger size. I bought my dress, then lost 15 lbs.

My bridal consultant said every 10 lbs is about 1 size down. Obviously this will vary because not everyone loses in the same places, but that was her guideline. Buy now, a good seamstress should be able to alter down 2 sizes.

Go shopping now and if you lose the weight or some of it they can take it in. My dress fits in boobs but I was told I need to lose 3 inches in my behind in a month. I told her to let it out.

I have a deep V in my dress. I bought it about 9 months ago and have lost 20 pounds since January. My alterations lady told me I can’t loose anymore weight due to the V in the dress. She can’t take it in on the sides at the top anymore bc it will be in danger of showing my chi chis. So just be mindful of that!!!

Good point my bridal shop also told me not to “lose too much” whatever that means to keep the integrity of the dress. I should have clarified, but not sure it will matter much as I don’t have time to lose more than a couple sizes.
When you shop and find a dress, ask the consultant if the dress can be altered down a few sizes should you lose 20 lbs or so.

I don't have any idea about weight loss and alterations, but my wedding's on August 8th too!
I got my dress from BHLDN (which I would definitely recommend, I love my dress and they gave us prosecco during the appointment) and it was delivered like 3-4 days after my appointment, so if you decide to wait until after you lose weight, you can still probably get a dress in time.
