Weight Loss & Alterations

K, on May 13, 2019 at 10:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
My wedding dress that I ordered in January came in last week. I went to try it on today for fun before I start alterations in the next month or so. I’ve lost 40 lbs since I ordered the dress and the lady at the dress shop said I had gone down 3 dress sizes based on my measurements 🎉 Good news is that it’s easy enough to take my dress in but given that my wedding is in November and I plan to continue losing weight i’m wondering how I should approach alterations. On one hand I feel like I should put them off as long as possible to allow for further weight loss and on the other hand I feel nervous about delaying alterations as I need my dress to be ready a month or so early for bridals...anyone else in a similar situation or have experience dealing with alterations while losing weight?

Hi there, sort of in the same situation. My dress fell through so I had to get a dress from a sample sale. There were slim pickings in my size, so I ended up with a dress that was 3 sizes too big, but again, much easier to make something smaller than bigger! Since your wedding is in November, I would wait until late August or early September to start alterations. Taking it in will be time consuming, so you should give them time to take in the bulk of the dress. Anything after that is just fine tuning.

When I went to my first appointment I asked when I needed to be at my final weight and she told me I already should be there. My advice is to wait until you are within a few lbs of goal weight. My seamstress was amazing and kept my dress only pinned until my final appointment, but I realize she didn’t have to do it.

I’m in the same situation. My seamstress said to make an appointment for about 6 weeks before the wedding. She said if I plan to lose more weight after the alterations are completed, they will alter the dress to be just a touch snug to accommodate any extra weight loss.

You definitely should put them off. Starting alterations in a month for your November wedding is way too early even if you weren't trying to lose weight. Alterations should start about 2 months out, with your final fitting a week or so before the wedding. My final fitting was actually just a few days before our wedding!

Definitely wait until as close to the wedding as possible. I wouldn't go any earlier than 8 weeks before your wedding. Maybe even 6 weeks before. I had my alterations done on the spot 3 weeks before my wedding. I didn't even have to leave the shop. So don't worry! You're seamstress will definitely get the dress done for when you need it
