Weddingwire website shutting down! 😡

Alexis, on March 2, 2021 at 10:05 PM Posted in Account Support 1 13
May I just start this with saying how inconvenient timing this is for 2020 brides that have had to postpone their weddings. I got engaged 2018 started heavy planning for my April 2020 wedding in 2019. It got postponed an entire year, and now that my guests are literally in the RSVP stage, which we’ve chosen to do digitally through this website, I get a two week notice that the website whose address I have printed on countless invitations for guests to access will be shut down. Terrible timing. I really hope this doesn’t screw over any of my guests. Like really, us 2020 brides can’t get a break.

Is the entire Wedding Wire operation shutting down, or are couples' websites only shutting down?

It’s only the customizable couples websites made in 2019 that are shutting down in two weeks. Any that were made after that are safe, I assume.

Could you ask support if they can extend yours?

OK. The knot bought Wedding Wire a couple of years ago. They have a history of buying wedding websites, leaving them running a couple of years, then swallowing them whole.

Added: this time I think Wedding Wire may have landed on top after the merger. But nothing to say how they will change things.

I agree with contacting support. I remember buying my custom URL and there were only one-year and two-year options. It's not really their fault that the pandemic happened and postponed weddings. They might not have thought this would be an issue because (my guess) is that WW assumed couples wouldn't purchase their URL until about a year out, leaving two years after the pushback due to the lockdowns.

I got this email as well. So frustrating! I haven't looked into this yet as my wedding is a little further out (August) but can we just remake it with the same link? Or will that not work? I swear the email said something about copying things over. But still I get the panic and frustration!

Yes we can remake it with the new program, and I have. It is much nicer than before, however the link cannot be the same as the previous one. Before my link was https://www.WeddingWire.com/CraigandAlexis but now it is https://www.WeddingWire.com/website/Craigandalexis and there’s no way to remove the /website/ part because it only allows you to customize past the last slash. This is a problem for me especially because I have already printed the original address on my invitations and my guests have already received them and are in the process of rsvping. But if you haven’t sent out invites yet then you’re probably okay.

That is super frustrating that the links can't be the same. I'm so sorry! Really annoying that Wedding Wire is doing this!

UPDATE: support got back to me!

“As long as you move the information over to the new website, the URL you have on your invitations will automatically be associated with the new website on March 16th. Your guests also still have access to the original site until then and can continue to RSVP uninterrupted.”
    What a RELIEF!!

    Hello all,

Due to technical updates to our wedding website platform, we are no longer able to support websites that were created prior to 2019. If you'd like help recreating your site on the new platform, our team is happy to help! Please reach out to help@weddingwire.com and a team member can help you copy over your information or walk you through the steps to create a new website. Your old wedding website URL will redirect to your new website once it's removed on March 16.
