WeddingWire reps please respond! MAJOR ETIQUETTE FAIL: just received a "Gift Reminder Email" from The Knot!

Hi all,

I don't use The Knot - obviously I use WeddingWire - but a friend of mine is getting married about a month before me, and yesterday I got an email from The Knot with the subject line "Gift Reminder Email: Bride Name & Groom Name, Wedding Date." This is HORRIBLE!

I would be MORTIFIED if my guests received something like this. Does anyone know if WeddingWire does this? I'm sure it's automated and that they don't even know that it went out, but now I'm paranoid the same thing will happen to my guests. I guess I could ensure it wouldn't be removing all their email addresses, but I'd love some confirmation from WeddingWire that this is NOT A THING because it is SO, SO BAD.

Can anyone weigh in on this and confirm for me that it won't happen to me? And if WeddingWire does this automatically, how can I override it to make sure this doesn't happen to my guests?

Thanks all!

Oh that's so gross. Following this thread.

Http://feedback.beta.theknot.com/forums/263843-theknot-com-ideas-feedback/suggestions/11196450-remove-gift-reminder-for-rsvp. Looks like you opted in to receive the reminder by asking for reminders of wedding details.

Not saying that makes it an appropriate "reminder" at all but that appears to be why it happened.

Thank you Stephanie! I like WW better (obviously) but my website is through TK (I liked their layout better) I will head over and make sure I opt out of this nonsense. I wonder if this is only for those that use the online RSVP? Because how else would TK have the guest's email address?

Yeah it sounds like guests can check a box to receive reminders when they rsvp and this is one of the reminders that get sent. I imagine it's actually a box you have to uncheck so by default you get the reminders.

Wow! I use wedding wire obviously, but made my website on the knot before discovering weddingwire. We don't have online rsvps set up, so hopefully none of our guests will receive an email like that.

Thanks for the responses above, and glad to know why I received it, but it doesn't solve the problem: whether my guests (via WeddingWire, NOT The Knot) opt in to receive updates, etc, I don't want a gift reminder email sent to anyone, ever. Is there a WeddingWire representative in these forums who can let us know if this is a thing in WW???

How embarrassing for the poor couple who is unknowingly reminding everyone to buy them something!

I don't like The Knot. Never used the site, but.....

Do you guys ever Google yourselves when bored? lol I do once in a while... and I saw all my registry items come up! The Knot somehow accesses popular store's registry and compiles them onto their website! I was pissed. There is an option somewhere and email them to have it removed. I thought it was so weird as I never gave permission for The Knot to use my name or anything at any time. Also, regular registry stuff doesn't pop up if you Google search someone's name, but stuff from The Knot was EVERYWHERE under my name! I have a very unique last name... paired with my first name, Im like the ONLY one with this name... I didn't want that all popping up when anyone looked me up!

Crap. My website is through the knot as I like their layout better. Now I'm worried...

Ugh the registry thing. You don't have to give TK permission to use your name. Your name is on your public registry. Just like Google can find your name on awards, newpapers, etc, it can find your registry. TK uses a similar aggregator to create the "Registry" page and get clicks/pageviews. It's fine if you want them to remove it but they aren't doing anything wrong or creepy. Public information posted online is public.

I've never heard of this happening on WW, but I would suggest you contact customer service and ask them. Your answer could be solved in a short 5 minutes.

@Stephanie I know, but it still irked me! My name doesn't come up in a search with registry stuff on Macys, or wherever... Only on The Knot. It just bothered me lol.

Oh my gosh! I need to check this now. Our wedding website is through The Knot (the design I liked best was there). I didn't upload any guest emails, but I need to make sure this does not go out to anyone in case they added their emails.

    Wow.

I was actually really glad they compiled the registry for a wedding we're going to later this spring. The couple's website on their STD didn't work, and he didn't remember where they registered. So the only way I found it was the knot!

WW operates with a skeleton staff on the weekends. You may not get a response until Monday.

If you had a wedding website and did not have the rsvp set up then how did your guests rsvp to the wedding?

We didn’t have online RSVPs. We used paper RSVPs through the mail.
