Weddingmix instead of videographer...

FutureMrsB, on January 4, 2018 at 11:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
Has anyone had any experience with WeddingMix? If so, what are your thoughs? I’ve been debating hiring a videographer but it’s not really in my wedding budget. This seems like a fun alternative to involve guests even more in the video process and it’s much more budget friendly.

Is this where guests take turns videoing? Or when a camera is set up somewhere? I would get a videographer.

That’s not super helpful - as I said a videographer is out of my budget. So my options are WeddingMix or no video, & I’d like input from people who’ve had experience with it!

Not wedding mix but friends used a similar site. Unfortunately their experience was not great, the only videos and pictures were really blurry and consisted of people yelling into their phones because they were on the dance floor, next to the DJ booth. If it's between no video and at least something then I would probably do it, but keep your expectations low for any crowdsourcing site.

Whoa, okay! Then the choice I would make is not hire a videographer. It would never be a good option to hire something like this instead of a videographer, but what do I know 🤷🏻‍♀️Only been a member of WW for a few years and hired a videographer.

@Nas what do you mean " It would never be a good option to hire something like this instead of a videographer"? Are you saying WeddingMix itself isn't a good tool? To me it looks cool but like the rest I don't know a ton about it..

Another cool thing I see on their website is the idea to take videos of pre-wedding activities (bridal shower, ring shopping, etc.) too- which is a really neat idea, whether you're using this actually app or just doing it on your own and piecing together.

Why wouldn’t it be a good option? So you had one experience with one videographer..... and that makes this the only option for others? Or you mean that was what was best for you?

Wouldn't this involve complete cooperation of your guests? Are you going to have someone with their phone videoing the entire ceremony? Are you doing a first look that you want video of? It's basically similar to having your friends and family work on your wedding day. They would then be your videographer. We gave in and hired a videographer (I know you said it's not in the budget) because we wanted to capture those moments from someone who actually knew what they were doing. Audio from your vows will likely not be great as well as the rest of the day. Just some things to consider because weddingmix still charges $450-$800 for you to even use their equipment to get decent audio. Otherwise they start at over $250 on packages because of fees. I looked into it too and opted out.

Exactly what @FutureMrsV wrote. Never have guests be in charge of something so important as video. Let guests be guests. I would forego this and put any money this would take into more/upgraded options for hosting guests.

I don't think it should be looked at as a replacement for videography, the quality isn't great, and the price is kind of steep for the most inclusive option. Even then you are basically just renting equipment, and having your guests take footage. I don't think it's worth it for the money honestly. I have friends who did it and weren't overly impressed with the results. You could probably achieve the same thing by renting a GoPro and a couple of mounts and passing it around on the dancefloor.

Another option...a friend of mine is a videographer and he met a couple a few months ago who didn't have a huge budget but still wanted some video. He worked with them and they agreed/decided to video parts of their ceremony (not with professional audio, just what their camera picked up), video of them while they are getting their pictures (broll---for the video savvy who know what that means), some speeches with the audio their camera picked up, and some shots of the cake, dances, etc. He told them they could have the raw video footage files, unedited, for about $500/$700. So basically the couple got their footage but not an actual video. The downfall? Not a real video to show off to friends. The best part? The had the video saved on an external hard drive. After the wedding, they had time and a little extra cash to save up and took that raw footage to get edited by the my videographer friends when they were ready. Idk what he charged to edit, but it was nice for the couple to not have to dish out thousands of dollars, they got to watch their raw footage clips at home until they were ready to have the video made.

As someone who didn't hire a videographer, I would rather save the $$$ and used it elsewhere in the budget. It seems like you'd be better off hiring a cheap videographer from Thumbtack for the same money $799 (I had quotes in the $500-$1000 range) than risk not getting anything from a stationery camera that still needs to be setup and monitored.

My recommendation, either save yourself the money and use it elsewhere, or go to Thumbtack and request some quotes if you really want some type of video.
