Wedding Website vs Wedding Invites

Kate, on March 18, 2019 at 11:21 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

We are trying to pull off this shindig both ecologically friendly as well as economically reasonable. How do you feel as a Wedding Website in place of physical invitations?

The Pros - The Knot's will track your RSVPs and everything for you; we'll avoid creating what is eventually fancy litter; save money on invites & stamps; the information is easy to access for guests & always available, no need to worry about misplacing

The Cons - I'm afraid it will seem cheap or tacky; I think people enjoy getting invites in the mail; we only have a couple older guests who I'm worried won't get it; the physical invite is helpful to have on you the day of for address & times (again this is more for our less techy guests)

I know they make ecofriendly invites but they're out of our budget, I would otherwise be going the Vistaprint road.

Thanks for your insight!!

As a guest, I have zero issue with online RSVPs but I think invites need to be mailed unless your event is more casual. If all I received was the link to someone’s wedding website, I’d probably still assume a formal invite was coming.

The wedding is pretty casual, we only invited 53ppl, and its a camping wedding, like our friends are pitching tents & staying over & the dress suggestion is laid back & comfortable.

In my opinion, a website isn't a substitute for invitations. A website is usually put up in addition to invites. I'm fine with online RSVPs, but can't imagine not getting an invite to a wedding.

I suggest at least sending e-vites. That's at least a little more personal. Some wedding websites have the option to send those e-vites through them, or you can also use services like paperless post. I was able to create one giant guest list through my website and have access to my bridal party. They used the same system to send all e-vites for any event. It gave them a one-click shop.

Mail the invites. RSVPing online isn't a big deal, but I think the invites should be mailed. If even on the invite (to save paper) you put please RSVP to X email or on X website. Maybe put a small RSVP card in for the older people if you don't think they will do online.

Exactly this! We did online RSVP on the knot and it’s been great so far. Saved a lot of paper and money by not doing mail-RSVPs (plus you get the instant gratification of getting an email alert as soon as one comes in which, for an impatient person like me, is reason enough in itself hahaha).

But we still sent physical invitations! As a guest I would definitely be waiting for a formal invite even if you sent a website link, and be confused when I didn’t get one.

We used Paperless Post for our invites and linked it to Zola where we had people RSVP to the events. It was super easy! We emailed 81 invites and you can check to see who has opened them, if any have bounced, etc. I highly recommend it and I also don't think it's cheap or tacky. We wanted an eco-friendly option and this was the best. Within 48 hours of emailing the invites we could see that 70 people had opened them. We could then reach out to those who hadn't opened to see if it went to spam. We already had people RSVPing and telling us how much they loved the website (I personally toss the invite and just bookmark the website when I am invited to a wedding since all the important info is on there).

I know some people like paper invites but for us it didn't make sense. We went to a fancy destination wedding last year and they used Paperless Post so that's where we got the idea from.

My husband and I used the knot website and we also designed our own virtual save the dates and invites. We're having a paperless wedding.
