Wedding Videography necessary?

KRM, on August 24, 2017 at 4:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

So, I understand that a videographer is usually employed to record the wedding (and sometimes receptions). My wedding is over a year away, but we don't have a very large budget to work with. So, Ive done a pretty good job of cutting costs by researching vendors.

However, there is not a large selection of videographers in my area. Most local ones are outrageously priced. So far, my biggest expense has been my photographer, which is what I had originally planned and am okay with. I had a friend get married a few years ago and she scrambled to find a videographer, but found an acquaintance who was more expensive than her photographer. But the videographer didn't do a really good job (captured NOTHING of Bride walking down aisle). So, my question is, do you think hiring a videographer is worth it? I understand that others won't be as unprofessional. But I'm wondering how much I will actually appreciate having a videographer.

It's going to vary by the person. Some will make every effort to make sure their budget will allow a videographer. Others can live without it. Me personally, I won't be having a videographer. I don't picture myself watching the video enough for it to be worth the money. The pictures mean more to me than a video. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have liked one. Finances are the biggest reason.

It's personal opinion. It's not necessary, but some people do want it.

I don't think it's necessary but if I could afford it - I would definitely do it.

I was torn on this topic, so I did lots of google searching. I read that not getting a videographer is the number one regret of wedding planning! That freaked me out enough to make room in my budget.

    Can you cut costs elsewhere?

I studied film and photography in college so for me YES. I needed a great photographer and videographer. We went with George StreetSmiley smile

I shopped around for a videographer. So many wanted thousands of dollars which Icouldn't fathom spending. I finally found a friend (who is a professional videographer) who would do it for around $500. All I waned was the ceremony and the other videographers wanted to do the whole dramatic theatrical shabang. I wasn't into that. I'm sure there are things at the reception which would be nice but what I care about the most is being able to rewatch the moment we are committing our lives to each other. It will be good for me to visit during hardships (even though people don't like to think it will ever come... IT WILL!). I'd do some shopping around and really tell the vendor what is most important to you. If you can make $500 work, you may be able to find one.

I had one for my first marriage and in ten years didn't watch it. We are not having one but splurged on photography.

Thanks everyone who has shared their opinion so far! It's strangely comforting to hear from other brides (I got engaged in June and have most major vendors booked for my wedding NEXT October. Me and my anxiety and type A personality planning so much!)

Budget isn't that much of an issue right now (because I have saved in other areas). I have found on for under a grand, depending on package. I'm going to look at his video work when I get home. Photography was the my one important detail and I've found my perfect photographer already!

Again, thanks everyone! I appreciate any and all input and perspectives!

Honestly, I don't think it is. I'm never really "wowed" by wedding videos I see on Facebook of my friend's weddings, and it's not something you can display in your home like photos are.
