Wedding venue scam?

Morgan, on June 9, 2017 at 5:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Me and my FH found a very cheap venue. They only have one site on the internet with not much information on it, they have no facebook page or nothing. They also have no reviews anywhere on Google. Do you think it's sketchy? Do people actually fake wedding venues online and take your money? Is it less sketchy if you visit the place then book, or could they still scam you and take your deposit and what not ?? Thanks in advance.

    What's the venue called? *nosey*

But I would really hope you visit a venue in person before booking.

Don't book a venue without visiting it and getting your questions answered by a venue coordinator first.

If you visit it and love it there, and they give you a contract for an event, then no they can't really scam you without legally getting caught for it.

They may just have a really limited online presence or be a new venue. Call them, visit in person, and ask about the things you are concerned about from online. If they are legitimate, they'll have answers.

Is it close enough that you guys could go and see it yourself in person? That way you will know right away if you still have that sketchy feeling or not. And ask a ton of questions! Ask also for stories of other weddings? Or a preferred vendor list?

It looks like a smaller venue, probably ran by a couple on their property. It's a basic website but the deposit is only $100, so I don't think they're trying to scam you. They have preferred vendors and caterers, you can always call the caterers and see what their thoughts are on the venue and what their experiences have been.

If you are really worried you can look up the name of the property owner in the county records to make sure it matches.

Agree with FutureMrsE, call some of the vendors they have on their website to see if they've worked with this venue and if they're reliable.

Visit it, not every venue will have a lot of information online. One that I looked at didn't, but it was gorgeous!

No, no one ever uses the wedding industry to scam people. You should totes just give them whatever they ask sight unseen. In fact make sure you give them your PIN numbers and credit card info too.

Eh I'd say be careful. I almost booked a venue like the one you are describing. But I just kept getting a weird vibe from the coordinator. I decided to trust my gut and not book with them. Their website prices vs what the coordinator was telling me were completely different. Apparently they hadn't updated their site in ages. They took a while to answer emails and phone calls to simple questions and it was too cheap for everything (ceremony/reception venue, photographer, make-up, invitations, videographer, food, decorations, real floral centerpieces, dj, officiant, cake, for 60 people at $6k)

Never book a venue without first going to see it, especially if it has no reviews...

Check the BBC for that location, not just the name. There is a venue near me that keeps opening & closing suddenly then reopens with a new name and different owner. The new owner is always a relative. Do a Google search on the address and it can tell you if it keeps changing names. And post on a local wedding FB group asking for feedback.

Visit before booking, but also trust your gut!
