Our wedding is about 6 months away and 4 months ago we signed and contract and paid a $500 deposit to hold the date. That they long have cashed. Yesterday I get a call from the lady who holds this places master calendar and she says that the owners have decided to move the date of one of those events to our weekend and just let her know. Now they are telling us we can't have the place for our date. She asked if we could move our date. Really lady? No we can't we already have all our other major vendors booked for that date. Can they really do this to us? If so the does that mean contracts and hold the date deposits really mean nothing?

If there is nothing in the contract about cancelling, then they cannot just give away your date. I would absolutely contact a lawyer and send the venue, in writing, notice of intent to sue if they cancel your event. As PP have said, you can have the lawyer contact for you. Trust me, contact from a lawyer usually gets a quick response.

I am so sorry. If it isnt in the contract about them being able to cancel i would email them and contact an attorney.

What a nightmare! I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I would definitely find a lawyer and let the venue know they cannot treat you like this.

    Good luck!

    I agree with everyone else.

Also, I wouldn't mind moving the date if they pay me all my deposits, replace STDs and invites and throw more free food and alcohol to the menu. How bad do they want the date?

It amazes me how some places are still in business when you hear them pulling something like this. I agree with PP regarding a certified letter, at the very least.

Thanks everyone for the advice. After much back and forth and us not backing down we have finally gotten the place back. What a mess. Unnecessary stress but I am glad it is over and done with and we can move on to getting other stuff done.
