Wedding staff won’t be wearing masks??

Scarlet, on March 17, 2021 at 5:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20
Hello Everyone! Just got an email from our venue peeps that the staff won’t be wearing masks because of liability purposes.

I’m confused. I asked them to explain what that meant and also if at least the people serving food would be wearing masks. I’m still waiting for a response but this doesn’t seem right to me.
I’m worried about my guests being uncomfortable.
What are your thoughts?

..... that makes 0 sense to me. How is having them wear masks a liability issue? What state are you in? If the state has dropped the mask mandate, to may be limited in your recourse.

Huh. Yeah, that honestly sounds really strange to me. There's not much to comment on until you've heard back from them as to why and if food servers are still going to be masked, though. That also seems like something you should have been told about beforehand. If they're really sticking to that and are able to give you an acceptable (to you) reason as to why they won't be masked, I would suggest maybe adding that information to your wedding website so guest can know in advance and have the opportunity to change their plans if that makes them uncomfortable. I'm not sure if you have wedding insurance, but you may want to check if having that would allow them to be masked. I'm honestly super curious as to what "liability reasons" would have them NOT wearing masks during a pandemic.

Yeah that makes no sense to me. It would be a bigger liability if someone were to catch COVID from their staff, wouldn’t it? Masks aren’t optional right now and I wouldn’t feel comfortable with them not having their staff wear masks, especially any food staff.

I’m so confused!!! I’m in California. I’ve already lost half my guest list because people are worried about the virus. I don’t want to lose any more. I’ve set up a call with them in a bit to hopefully sort this out.

Was wondering if anyone on here has experienced the same thing.

Omgosh ur in California and they wont be wearing masks?? Im sorry that’s frustrating. See if u can add in the contract that all staff wear masks and if not maybe u need to find a new vendor. I really hate to say that tho

Can you postpone your event until the vaccination rate is better in your area? It doesn't sound like you or your guests will feel safe with so many people unmasked (guests and staff).

Sorry that is not acceptable. Let your venue contact know that you are not comfortable and unless they all wear masks you will cancel your wedding at their venue and forfeit all losses.

I'm pretty sure California still has a mask mandate. I would look up the state regulations currently in place and point them out to the vendor. If they give you trouble, I would consider reaching out to the state if they are unwilling to comply with state regulations.

Yes we are all still wearing masks here in California so it makes no sense! I agree with this! All businesses proving a service are required to wear masks.

Huh?? Wouldnt it be more of a liability if they dont wear masks? You should also look into the current laws on gatherings in your state because they may legally have to. If so, all youd have to do is send them where it says this and say youll report them if they dont.

If they’re serious, you should contact the state. You probably shouldn’t go with them anyways, but involving the state should help you recoup any non refundable deposits you made. They should not keep your money if the state laws mandate mask use.

    That is ridiculous.

Try to get that mask refusal in writing and report then to the BBB, city, Yelp, everyone and anyone you can. What they're proposing is illegal.

That’s insane that you live/have your venue in a state with such strict covid restrictions yet your venue mentioned that your venue staff won’t be wearing masks. Doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense

In Texas the mandate to wear masks was lifted and businesses are open at 100% capacity. With that being said, there are still businesses that have mask required signs. Do whatever you can to get them to put safety and health first. That’s ridiculous.

Ooof—that would be a hard pass for me. If they refuse to wear masks, is there any chance they would release you from your contract and find a new venue? I would be very concerned about a venue that won’t follow basic health and safety protocols.

Hi, I have been wearing masks for three years before COVID thanks to a condition called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. It is more common than many people are aware of, just in a milder form. Think of the people you know of who get headaches from perfume. This is a mild form. I have a more severe form which means that fabric softener can cause me to stop breathing. So, masks have been a big part of my life for years.

Why do I tell you this? Because it will link in with the liability issue if the venue's staff and/or lawyers were able to find what mine did when I was up for my disability court date. My lawyer had several studies that explained the dangers of extensive mask wearing and how it can increase a variety of respiratory issues. This meant that it wouldn't be considered safe for me, or others with compromised respiratory systems, to go hours every day wearing one. In fact, I have it in my records that I would become ill after less than two hours. My disability was approved just before the mask mandates were put in place last year. Coincidentally, those same studies vanished from PUBMED and the other places where my lawyer had found them in the first place.

However, if the venue has staff who are compromised where a mask could cause them to be at higher risk for mask-induced pneumonia then forcing such people to wear them would be a doorway for liability.

Now all of that was said by at the same token knowing that we can't know their reasoning but this is one way where it would be reasonable.

Vendors not wearing masks isn't crazy to me -- it's the fact that you are in Cali and they aren't wearing masks that's crazy. I'm in South Carolina and we don't plan to have our guests wear mask, and we already know that our vendors, nor our venue staff will be wearing them. But we don't have any restrictions in my area that state that we have to. California, on the other hand, is still under a lot of mandates if I'm not mistaken, so that is something I would be a little confused about -

Friends of mine had a covid wedding, spread out near 50 plus WP, late last summer, saying masks required of all. Well groom's mom got upset, she and her other som would not come, his only close family. So only a month they notified all who had accepted that masks were optional. 42 of previous 47 accepting told them they would no longer be coming. Unless you require masks or vaccination proof in advance ( not at the door) , in an area where people believe in science and practice medicine, many will decline for the staff not wearing masks. And wearing masks does not change their liability. Not wearing masks may.
