Wedding registry question

Jessica , on February 21, 2016 at 1:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Some background... FH and I are first time homeowners as of September. We have a long to do list for things around our mew home. My mom has suggested that in addition to bed bath and beyond we register at home depot or menards. Nothing crazy but for like the door handles we want to replace or towel hooks. I havent seen this before on someones registry and i havent seen anything on here about it. So my question is what would you think if you saw these things on someones registry? Is there anything against it?

My aunt, who is 70, told me she has been to weddings where lumber and power tools were on the registry, and she didn't find it too odd, but decided to give cash instead of trying to lug items like that around to a wedding.

I think your guest would understand since you recently bought a home. It's not like your asking for straight cash for home improvements.

@almostmrsb I certainly would not put lumber or power tools on the registry!!

I think a Home Depot registry would be fine. If guests don't want to buy you something off it, but want to buy a physical gift, you have the BBB registry.

I think it would be fine to register for things like that. The idea of a registry is to give you things to help start your life together, and that's what those things would be doing.

I think that's an awesome idea and people I know have done it before. I'd make sure to register for a grill and tools!

Home Depot doesn't do real registries. Try Amazon.com though.

I think that's an awesome idea! I don't know many people who actually bring a physical gift to a wedding, most buy it online and have it shipped to you (but they do physical gifts for your shower). So I don't see a lot of people having issues bringing stuff from Home Depot to the wedding. Registering for home improvement stuff is so much better than asking for gift cards or $$.

I see nothing wrong with it but make sure there's an option for them to ship the gift from the store to your home. Some registries require you to manually select that option since the standard is to get the product to the buyer. I would also considering Amazon as a registry. You can add other items from stores like Home Depot on the Amazon registry. This way you could have multiple stores and still just use 1 registry. A friend did register for a high end tool set and they did it via Amazon. It made sense for them so I would gift it!

Home Depot and Menards don't do registries. Some stores will get you create a wish list in the store but it's only for the one store you go to. Do an amazon registry and put what you want on there. Totally fine.

Unfortunately, Home Depot and Lowes don't have registries. But you could register at a place like Walmart or Target that sells home imporovement-type things. Amazon is another good idea.

I second amazon. You can also register for things in Amazon that are on other websites, so maybe that would work?

I would probably go for an Amazon one, but I think Menard's does have an option to create a registry. I don't know if it's online only or in store as well, but I set one up online with them just a few weeks ago!

I would honestly just put any wedding cash towards Home Depot purchases later.

You could suggest options like gift to places like Home Depot/lowes are welcome. Some people prefer to give gift cards so you can get what you need

We tried doing a Home Depot registry, and it didn't work well. Home Depot could never actually find the registry information when our guests went there, and I think they have now discontinued their registries altogether.

That being said, an Amazon registry will allow you to add items from any online site. So you could pick out the items you want on Home Depot's site, and add them to your Amazon registry. This will work for anyone willing to look online.

Menards does do registries, we have one for the exact same reason as you. You can set it up online or in store. You can scan using their phone app. Like BBB, gifts can be sent directly to you, picked up in store, or sent to purchaser to gift wrap. We have many household tools as well as light fixtures and a storm door. I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to haul the storm door to my shower, but the boxes for the other items are less bulky than a set of pots and pans or a stand mixer.

We are doing a Home Depot registry for that reason. We have a few things we would like to fix around the house.

My boss listed that she was registered for Pottery Barn on her shower invite and then underneath had "gift cards for Bed Bath & Beyond and Home Depot" listed
