Wedding Planner Expectations

Suzanne, on March 5, 2020 at 4:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hi fellow brides! So I'm still trying to figure out all this wedding stuff, and I listened to the internet when it recommended that I spend $$$$ for a wedding planner. I have a destination wedding, so I really wanted someone who knew the area to help with local coordination and vendor referrals.

Well, I guess I just expected my wedding planner to do more. She ghosted me for 4 weeks (no response to emails or texts), and then sent me the wrong vendor information and told another vendor the wrong wedding date. And it's not just the planner, but all of my vendors are slow to respond or are sloppy with their correspondences. I know no one is going to care about my wedding as much as me, but I assumed that when I hired people and paid them thousands of dollars, they would do the job outlined in their contracts. I have my own job that I do, so I wasn't planning on taking on the role of wedding planner or vendor nanny. All my vendors have 5 stars on this website, so are my expectations just too high? Am I being a bridezilla? My wedding is 4 months out and I don't have music, officiant, florist, invitations, or even wedding colors. Should I just do it myself and not wait for the wedding planner to get back to me with her vendor list or color suggestions?

This isn't suppose to be a rant, I am genuinely asking, how much of this planning and coordination should fall to me versus the wedding planner that I hired? (And yes, I hired a wedding planner and not partial coordinator person).

If you hired a full service wedding planner it really should fall on them for being able to keep up with your vendors.

What does her contract state she does? How much did she charge? We paid $1,000 but she was just a day of coordinator so I did all the planning.

Right, it's her job and in our contract, but with a month wasted and the wedding day approaching with very little finalized, I wonder if I should just cut my losses and do it myself, or keep waiting for the planner to do her job. I am just surprised that she has such high ratings, so maybe it's me who's over reacting? Or that she'll throw everything together a few months before the wedding and I'm stressing and doubting her for no reason?

Is she also the day of coordinator too? Or is there a way to adjust your contract with her to only have her as a day of coordinator or to just adjust her services overall?

Yikes. I would want to choose my colors and have some input even if I hired full service.
But it sounds like you're getting no service.

A destination wedding where? Since it appears to be the planner and vendors is the culture just a slower pace of life there?

I'd be very direct with the planner about your expectations for her and ask if she's able to meet them. If not, probably time to cut ties.

I'm getting married in Florida so there is no language barrier and not much cultural barrier.

What I'm really asking for is different experiences working with wedding planners so that I know if this is normal or not. A lot of my friends have gotten married, but they've always just had a day-of coordinator instead of a full wedding planner.

What I was expecting from this is that we would email or phone call a few times a month so that the wedding checklist comes together. On February 6, I talked to my wedding planner and she said that she would send me a few portfolios of her favorite photographers to work with, all with some different styles, and the information for a reception DJ so that I can choose one and let her know form there. I never got that email, and all of my follow-up emails and texts are ignored. It's her job that this all comes together, so perhaps it doesn't matter if these decisions are made 5 months before my wedding or 5 weeks, but I guess going along with the wedding-wire timeline that stuff would get done sooner rather than later. But maybe wedding planners don't need several months compared to the DIY? I'm starting to panic a bit, but should I trust the planner's high ratings and that she'll put it all together in the end?

Wow, do you have a way to get out of the contract ie fire her? I work too hard for my $$ to get service like you are describing. If she is not tied to the location where you are getting married, I'd work with someone else. There is no reason why you don't have some of your vendors hired already
Wait much longer and they will be booked until fall.
