Wedding Planner Costs and Tasks

Chanie, on May 22, 2019 at 1:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

My mother in law is a wedding planner but she does not want to plan my wedding because she just wants to be able to attend and enjoy the day. I was a little bummed because I love her work and would be more comfortable working with her. Now I have to find a wedding planner.

What are the usual costs and tasks of the wedding planner and do they serve as the day of coordinator too? I haven't been to many weddings and my mom and aunts planned their own so I am so confused and feel overwhelmed.

There are different levels of service a wedding planner offers. Generally if you have a full service planner they will act as the day of coordinator as well. I had a full service wedding planner and paid $12k in a very high cost of living area in California but my friends in lower cost of living areas paid between $5-8k. I would contact a few in your area and ask what services they offer as this can vary greatly.

We are paying $1,000 for a month of coordinator in Denver. Can she help with all the planning leading up, then you hire a day of coordinator?

This is just what I was going to ask. Isn't there a way she can help you now, and hand over the reins to a DOC on the wedding day? Especially since you feel most comfortable with her, rather than a stranger.

Just wanted to add because I know other people are suggesting she helps you and then hands over the reigns. My wedding planner didn’t just help me pick out decorations and colors. She handled all communication with vendors, set up hotel room blocks, arranged transportation, handled all contracts, purchased and assembled welcome bags, put together my timeline etc. As well as assembled vision boards, picked out place settings/flowers/invites. So it just depends on what level of service you’re wanting.

I am glad you are letting your mother-in-law enjoy the day as an honored guest, rather than having to work hard (before and during).

I would just interview a few local ones with good reviews, compare their quotes, and choose your coordinator. The costs are going to be completely location-specific.

Im confused now because I guess I just need a decorator and day of coordinator not a planner . I will be contacting vendors myself and will diy much of my wedding. I just wanted someone to decorate the venue, and assist me on the day of the wedding.

Okay then you don’t need a full service wedding planner! If you want to pick out decorations yourself and just need someone to set up then you need a day of coordinator. If you need someone to help design the wedding and figure out colors/flowers/decor then there are planners that offer a la carte design services. I did not contact any vendors myself or diy anything which is why I had a full service wedding planner.
