Wedding party clothing

Hi all, I’m currently in the stage of planning where the bridal party wants to start looking for outfits and I’d love some feedback on colours before I set them loose!

For background, our venue is an estate in the Pacific Northwest, on the ocean with forests all around. The venue itself isn’t “foresty” - rather more classic. Theme for the day is garden party and colours are lots of shades of pinks, yellows, pale purple and apricot.
I want my bridesmaids to choose their own dresses in these colours, similar to the examples in the photo. My groom is also very excited to wear dark green like the suit in the photo. My dress is also bright ivory.
My question is about the groomsmen. I’m going back and forth between a light tan like in the photos and black, which would be more formal but very harsh compared to everyone else.
Would really value anyone’s opinions and thoughts! Smiley smile

Your fiancé should choose his side's attire as men know suits more intimately. I think if a couple were asking their friends to purchase wedding attire, it's practical and economical to find attire they will rewear. Some only consider the bridesmaids, but men's suits are 2.5- 3x more expensive than dresses. Thus, if men of the groomsmen's age wear khaki suits in the Pacific Northwest, then this would be suitable. On the flipside, I don't often see this color on my east coast male colleagues. Good luck, your garden-esque wedding sounds lovely.

Thanks so much LM, really great points! I’m only wondering about the aesthetic because luckily the groomsmen have given me full decision making on color as I will be purchasing the fabric for their suits to be made of Smiley smile

You're probably not going to like my opinion but none of it looks like it goes together. The women's dresses look all over the place. There's too many different colors, patterns, fabrics, etc. It's one thing to let them pick a dress in different styles but keep the color and length the same but this is has no uniformity to it. I would be very distracted by all the different dresses. I also don't know how well they will photograph together. As for the suits, I think it would look off to have one person in a dark suit and the rest in light colored suits. I think you need to work picking dresses and suits that have more uniformity.

I agree with Veronica. I would find this really busy and distracting. I also think it looks super weird when bridesmaids are in all different colors/patterns, then all the groomsmen are dressed in the exact same suit. It looks like two wedding parties from two different weddings. I think if there is going to be uniqueness amongst the dresses, there should also be uniqueness amongst the groomsmen’s attire. One thing I’ve seen successfully done is the ombre effect. The bridesmaids would choose solid dresses in different shades of the same (or complimentary) colors, and be arranged either lightest to darkest or darkest to lightest at the alter. Then the groomsmen would wear ties that matched the corresponding bridesmaids dresses.

Thanks Cece and understand it’s not everyone’s thing Smiley smile I love this look and am excited to execute.

I agree that it could look strange for the groomsmen to all wear the same outfit if the girls are all different. What do you think about different cuts/suit styles for the men in the same fabric? Or alternatively the same cut in different shades of the same color?

I think that green and khaki suits for the groom and groomsmen would be fine. Just have the groomsmen match your fiancé’s suit with their ties. I think the green and black would look strange. If you don’t want to go khaki, I’d just put them all in green.

With the bridesmaids, I agree your examples are a bit distracting. I’d say put them in the same color but they can mix solids or prints, or they’re all in the same color family (like shades of purple in the earlier example) and can have different style dresses, or the same dress style but a variety of color options. Basically you want to pick something that will tie them together visually even though they don’t match.

I think either of those options for the groomsmen would be great! I think it would really make the mismatched wedding party attire feel deliberate.

The mix of floral and solids in this photo is gorgeous and doesn’t look overwhelming at all. It takes a skilled eye to make it cohesive, regardless of how many bridesmaids you have, because not everyone can wear the same colors without looking sickly due to individual warm vs cool skin tones.

For the men, have them wear the same shirts and pants but mix up the ties to look cohesive with the bridesmaids. Too many different suit styles can look thrown together last minute with no consistency.

I think the mismatched bridesmaids in the pictures you shared look lovely and fit really well with the garden party theme. I love the personality that it brings! For the groomsmen, I agree that black and dark green together would look odd, and the tan/khaki fits better with your theme and the colors that you've chosen for the bridesmaids.

There's nothing wrong with a pastel color palette. I'd put all the men including the groom in gray suits if it was me. That would also be a lot more versatile down the road regardless of who is buying the fabric.

I agree with CM! I attended a mismatched wedding a few years ago in Newport and the men were all in khaki pants with navy blazers/the same ties while the girls were all in the same color palate but mixed between patterns and solids. Mixing different fabrics can be tricky, but still definitely doable with a good eye. We are also doing mismatched for our wedding, and I gave my bridesmaid's an online account with ideas for them to go through, but ultimately said the style is up to them as long as it's within the color palate!
