Wedding officiant

Samantha, on November 18, 2019 at 7:06 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
Hello. I am in the process of trying to hire a wedding officiant. I’ve found to great people, one through wedding wire and one through gig masters/ the bash. I really love the one I found through wedding wire but he wants the entire fee of his services upfront where other Officiant’s seem to only want a deposit like $50 and the rest the day of. He also doesn’t provide a contract just a “receipt” stating the date and time of wedding. He also has 35 great reviews on wedding wire but it’s sort of off putting wanting the whole fee up front and having no contract. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this also and what they decided to do. Thanks, Samantha

I would never hire a vendor without a contract, especially giving them money up front. What will you do if he just doesn't show up?

I hired someone without a contract and I regret doing so. I should have known better especially since I work in the legal field, but I thought I could trust her because she was also the florist for my brother's wedding. Since we didn't have a contract certain things weren't spelled out that should have been. If I could do it again, I wouldn't have hired her. My recommendation is not to hire someone without a contract.

I am worried it could be a scam. But then at the same time, he has a 5 star review on wedding wire and an official website when you google him. I wonder if anyone could review someone on wedding wire so the reviews could possibly be false. He said most Officiant’s do not offer contracts but the other one I spoke too does. I just don’t want to pass on him if he is actually legit since he seemed perfect on the phone and his reviews are so great.

He doesn't necessarily have to be a scammer for things to go south. He could be a great guy and a wonderful officiant, but what if he comes down with the flu the day of your wedding? He has your money and you have no contract and no recourse.

That is true, he did mention having a backup in case of an emergency. What exactly should be in a contract from a wedding officiant?

I would never hire someone for your wedding without a contract. You want to make sure that you have a contract with everything they will be doing written out and signed by them and you. That way, if something happens, you have proof of their promised services.

As far as the payment goes, I have not heard of many people wanting the whole payment upfront. Heck, even wedding venues typically give you until the week of to pay them in full (my brother's wedding venue gave him until the day of the wedding to pay; but he did pay in full way before that). I would say pass on the one who wants payment upfront and offers no contract. You have to make sure you're covered with a contract in case he doesn't show up the day of.
