I mean, condoms or copper IUD are pretty much your hormone-free options, but we really can't help you with this.

If this is the first time you've considered BC, you need to talk to your doctor.

I mean, besides not having sex.....

    Talk to your doctor.

The only thing that works is temping and charting and you have to be diligent. Meaning you have to sleep with a thermometer next to your bed and record your temp as soon as you wake up. Also, it's recommended that you do it either rectally or vaginally to get a good temp. Every day.

ETA: I'm curious, what are you going to do if you are on one of your peak ovulation days during your honeymoon, abstain?

Body temp monitoring and tracking ovulation cycles doesn't work. It may work for a short amount of time but so does pure dumb luck. Sperm can live in a vagina for up to 7 days after ejaculation and an egg can remain primed for fertilization and attachment for up to 5 days, which leaves you unable to have sex for 7 days leading up to ovulation and 5 days after at the bare minimum. Many people also ovulate at multiple points in their monthly cycle but each egg doesn't always cause a rise in temperature. A woman is born with all the eggs she'll have in her lifetime and that number is roughly 1 million so obviously there are more eggs than monthly cycles between the time you hit puberty and when you enter menopause. If you're stressed (like by spending time tracking temps to make sure you don't get pregnant), you'll throw off your cycle and then any tracking you did before will have to be thrown out while you develop a new cycle. It not sustainable, it's not accurate, and it is 100% NOT recommended as birth control by the sex education community. I worked in peer sex education in college so I have a lot of feelings about this topic.

There's the natural family planning method or fertility awareness. You would definitely want to talk to your doctor and do some research because it does require you to really hone in on your body and know what it's doing and when. Lots of cycle tracking and taking your basal temperature daily. There's more to it but the gist is just being aware of your own natural functions.

The only 100% fool proof natural contraception I know of is abstinence. But when you are married that's not necessarily the best option. There are many bc options that do not require taking a pill. I agree with PPs that you should discuss them with your doctor and get their recommendations.

I would NOT recommend the rhythm method. My cousin did that and now she has 3 unplanned kids. Talk to you doctor, not an online wedding forum.

Reminds me of the video from Pre-Cana. "We used natural birth control methods for all 14 of our kids!" I'm being slightly sarcastic... lol

There are natural methods that have higher effectiveness rates if you follow the system. I have many friends that are successfully planning their families using natural family planning methods and are only getting pregnant when planned. I teach one of the methods, and I've only had one unexpected pregnancy from a client that followed the system 100%. It's not easy and requires a lot of spouse communication about days of fertility and infertility. None of the methods I'm listing below are rhythm methods. And people from all walks of life come to learn the method that I teach (Creighton) - although it has a religious basis, I have several non-religious clients who prefer not to take hormonal birth control for health reasons and are very successful. It does require abstinence during times of fertility, but that is a choice couples have to make if they want a natural method.

The three most common methods are:

    1. Symptom-Thermal (temperature (under the tongue) and mucus check)

    2. Creighton (mucus only, can be coupled with medical care by NaPro doctors - really great for infertility or medical problems but works for avoiding pregnancy as well)

    3. Marquette (mucus, temperature, and ovulation monitor)

Each of the methods has pros and cons, but you should definitely seek out a professional that teaches the method. Trying to figure out a natural family planning method on your own has a high likelihood of resulting in an unplanned pregnancy. There are lots of NFP Facebook groups that you could seek out for support/suggestions. Good luck!

FFS, please ask your doctor. Why anyone would trust their fertility to a bunch of internet strangers blows my mind.

And there are lots of birth control options that don't include taking a pill everyday, but you would know that if you asked your doctor.
