Okay, first post, so be gentle. My fiance and I are getting married on October 23rd, 2021. We've already booked our venue, a barn, and its exactly what we want. We want it to be pretty rustic and maybe a little industrial? (I'm not sure if that's the right word) and our main colors are burgandy and navy.

Its going to be a very small wedding, probably only 25-35 people at most, and most of them are his family (my family doesn't approve and refuses to come). So, we don't want to have a fancy dinner, because it wouldn't fit with the theme, and it would just be too much money to spend for people that don't really care what we serve. I do though. I know that I want a hot drink bar with hot chocolate, coffee, and apple cider, and a smores bar, because we're having a a bonfire as part of the reception. We want it to be very chill and laid-back, more like we're all just hanging out.
FH wants sliders and fries and a couple snack-type foods for the reception dinner, and I do really like the idea, I feel like it fits with what we want, and that would let us do a few different kinds for variety, i just don't know if its enough food for everyone, because I've really only seen sliders done as appetizers.. I do tend to be an over-planner, though, so I don't know. Thoughts??

I actually really love the slider idea!
You could do typical burger sliders.
Chicken slider maybe a plain and a buffalo option BBQ pork sliders. I’d do a different side than fries. They get cold fast! You could do potato salad, pasta salad, Mac and cheese, and a salad.

I agree that sliders might not be enough. I've only ever really seem them served as an appetizer. I would serve additional food like BBQ, hot dogs, and burgers. I would also have side options like mac & cheese, baked beans, and fries. I saw that your future father-in-law is a chef, but does he have a way to make sure everything is safely prepared at the venue and served that people wouldn't be touching everything. With Covid, self-serving/buffet wouldn't be a good idea. Plated is really the best option so that guests aren't passing around germs.

We planned to do a rustic chic wedding and our chosen food was fresh stove oven pizzas. they were a caterer who brings the entire set up and makes the personal sized pizzas continuously for the contracted time. It was cool idea because they offered gourmet flavors that we had picked. Covid severely changed our plans so we did not get to execute this outdoorsy laid back idea but it sounds like it could fit your theme and you can probably get your future hubby's buy in. Then you won't be concerned if everyone had enough to eat. Who doesn't love pizza and salad!?!

I think that if you add something else (like your Mac & cheese idea) that would be awesome! With all the other things you plan to serve, you’ll be fine.

I think sliders and fries are a great idea for the theme! If you’re worried about variety though you can always offer something simple like chips and dips or veggie trays. Good luck and congratulations!

I went to an October 31st wedding this year. It was a beautiful, rustic wedding, probably the most beautiful I’ve ever been to. It was at 7 pm, so very formal attire, and they basically served appetizer trays. Meats and cheeses, breads, crackers, fruits, etc. It was late enough that the mothers (my sister being one of them) encouraged them not to serve anything really heavy. So, all of that to say, I think it kind of depends on the time of your wedding. But, if your wedding is earlier and will be more of a meal for your guests, just add a bunch of sides to go with the sliders. Who doesn’t love sandwiches Smiley winking congratulations and good luck!!

Is your venue allowing you to self cater? Who's going to do the set up and clean up? How are you keeping the food warm?

I'd add cole slaw and have a vegetarian option. Make sure you have at least 3 sliders per person.
I love sliders, myself. You can get palm leaf or bamboo plates, that would be easy cleanup and fit your theme. IMO, they have an elevated rustic look, and they're compostable.

I was considering having a small 'micro-wedding' with about 30 people; a venue that I was looking into had a package just for it. They would provide a small cake, finger foods like deli sandwiches, etc. and they had an option for appetizers for extra $$. They had add ons as well, like a mimosa bar, for example.

Since it's a 30 person wedding, I think the deli sandwiches and other finger foods would be good. Fruit, veggies and dip, sandwiches (the ones on croissants.. mm,) pigs in a blanket, soup/salad/sandwich, etc. I'd find a caterer who can manage something small and simple or see if the venue has any specific vendors that they like to work with.

If you wanted to go the meal route, maybe ya'll could get together at a later time to have dinner or go somewhere a bit after the ceremony to have a sit down meal. Only downside to that is that your guests would have to pay for themselves, but it shouldn't be a huge deal.
