Wedding makeup

Cassie, on August 16, 2021 at 8:21 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 15
We're on a small budget so we can splurge in the honeymoon so I'm weighing costs for everything possible. Right now I'm trying to determine if it would be cheaper to have my makeup done or buy high quality products and do it myself.

When I look up the cost for makeup I see a huge range. What have y'all experienced as a price for simple sweat proof makeup?

I've thought about that too. My area seems to range from $85 to $185 for make up alone. I followed a few on Instagram to see their quality. I found one that I like that does bride hair and makeup for $200. I think I'll go that route instead of the stress of doing it myself. What about your bridesmaids? Are you thinking of offering them to use MUA or asking them to do it?

Well only one of my bridesmaids is a woman. And only one of the guys would wear makeup but he doesn't wear much so probably not

Do you use makeup often and are you comfortable applying it, so that you are certain it will photograph well? If yes, I would probably buy some high quality products and do it myself, since you will use them up later. If no, go for a MUA. I don't know how much you would need to buy, but buying all you might need may end up costing you more than a MUA.

I personally would hire a MUA, I wouldn't ever consider doing my own makeup for my wedding day. But that's just me, I need my makeup FLAWLESS and I wouldn't be able to pull it off lol.

Have you looked into those cosmetology schools? They usually have more affordable pricing since the students are learning, but still have experience.

I love makeup - it's a huge hobby for me, I really enjoy applying it and have many, many products, from low-cost to high end and I think the cost of furnishing a makeup kit that would achieve the look you want including all tools would far outstrip what you'd pay for a makeup artist, unfortunately. And that doesn't even take into account that it takes time and money to figure out what products work with your skin, and which don't. This is definitely not something I would choose to skip, unless I was extremely confident in my ability and very comfortable with the products I had access to.

Rather than sweat proof what you really need is makeup for high definition photography. If it isn’t, you will be washed out in photos. Depending on what you buy and the time going into practicing, it will work out cheaper in the long run to go with a makeup artist on Instagram.

You can also look up on facebook/instagram or ask people in your area of up and coming make up artists (even if you have a beauty school in your area you may find someone who needs to get experience). I had someone who does make up on the side do mine for our engagement photos. She doesn't do it professionally yet but does small weddings, and events. She did a great job and I paid $25!!!!

    Hope this helps Smiley smile

I have literally seen such a range in makeup prices!! It depends on the area and so many other factors. Maybe see if you can find a newer makeup artist that doesn't charge as much and that would be cheaper than buying?

I have no answers for you, unfortunately, but I just wanted to say "Solidarity!" I'm having the same debate, and I'm not sure what to do either. Hopefully, we'll figure this out!

    Hi,

Im a beautician, I had my own salon in Germany and did a lot of weddings. Now I’m in a small town in Pennsylvania.

If I was in your area I’d gladly help but I can at least try to give advice online.

There are more affordable artists that just start out. The downside is they often don’t have a Great make up, brush mit yet. These kits are very expensive.

What make up do you already have? Are you used to doing it yourself?

I’d advise to get some basic items yourself anyways because you maybe will need to refresh it.

A good quality eyeshadow brush and a good foundation brush or beauty blender.

I wouldn’t save money on items like eyeshadow or foundation and mascara.

Lipstick and eyeliner and brows are fine from the drugstore in my opinion

You need a no flashback, no spf foundation for photos and some contouring so you have definition in the photos.

If you want to do it yourself you’ll need to invest about 250-350 dollars but you can keep the items and there are stores were you can split payments without additional cost in case that is more convenient.

If you do it yourself I’d buy it soon and start testing and practicing. You can exchange items that don’t work for you.

    I’d practice daily.

If you hire someone let them test it first if you like it and make sure you have items to reapply make up in case you sweat, cry etc. it’s a Wedding after all.

You could buy some items yourself and ask a newer artist to help you with application. They are often happy to get something like a wedding into their portfolio.

If you need advice that’s more specific just ask, I’m glad to help.

    Good luck!

I would say if you can find a company that does both hair AND makeup then go for it. I am going to be booking from a company that does bridal hair and makeup for $225. And I agree with one of the other girls, if you buy high end makeup then it may cost you more than to get it done. Personally I would just hire a MUA Smiley smile

Cool advise! Could you please share why no SPF foundation? I wear a tinted SFP daily and layer it under my foundation.

I am doing my own makeup and maybe have someone do my hair. I am going to get microblading for my brows, have appointment at the best shop in town. I am turning 40, and Asian, two factors that affect accessibility for a makeup artist to do it right. I found a foundation that would minimize fine lines, and am practice different products and looks to test how they stay, etc. I can do more research but not 100% confident with makeup artists doing my face due to aesthetic differences

I think by the time you buy everything, you might as well pay an artist unless it's stuff you're gonna use again a lot. The high end make up, particularly the stuff that doesn't move, when you buy all of it (primer, foundation, bronzer, highlighter, contouring kit, eyeshadow, liner, lipstick, setting spray) adds up REALLY fast. The high end foundations can be over $40 on their own and the drug store stuff will either start to turn orange or slide off your face.
