Wedding Mains round 2 - what would you eat?

mrswinteriscoming, on June 14, 2020 at 5:07 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19

Hi all

We’ve sat down with the family to discuss meal options for our wedding and it seems the mains are a point of contention. We are allowed to choose 2 and have narrowed it down to 4, which in summary are:- Crispy Skin Salmon w Noodles- Roast Chicken Breast w Potatoes- Roasted Lamb Rump w Eggplant Caponata- Charred Beef Sirloin w Potatoes
My mother and grandmother are of the view that being a black tie affair we can’t serve chicken. I strongly disagree and think Chicken is a safe option as almost all eat it. Similarly I thought the same about beef sirloin but they said the lamb uses a better cut of meat.
For me personally, I want to choose options that will be loved by the crowd. Help me out, which would you pick in these two battles:1. Chicken OR Salmon; and2. Lamb OR Beef?

Chicken and Lamb. With no eggplant with lamb. Choose a sweeter veg, with lamb. ( I like beef but not charred anything. )

I agree with you, chicken and beef would be the safer options because they are meats most people eat regularly if they eat meat. We had sirloin and haddock at our wedding because our venue was on the coast - I felt like I couldn’t leave out fish if we were on the water in Maine! Personally, I would pick sirloin and roast chicken because they’re crowd pleasers. I don’t find salmon or lamb automatically more refined, it’s all about how they’re prepared. I’m sure beef and chicken will be up to the same standard but a bit safer.

Thank you! I just don’t understand how a black tie dress code makes chicken too simple? If it’s cooked well it’s not an issue to me!

Lol there was a confit duck leg option that they wanted for it’s ‘elegance’ and thought I was being ridiculous for insisting that duck is too polarizing and not something many people have eaten or would pick.

If chefs can serve chicken at 3 star restaurants, you can definitely serve it at a black tie wedding. Chicken and beef are the safest options. If your crowd likes fish then salmon instead of chicken.

I would pick chicken and lamb because I just really like lamb and never get to have it, but chicken and beef is a great choice too. Fish can be a little risky.

I'm doing chicken and beef. They are most popular and are definitely fine for an elegant black tie event. Charred anything may not be a fan favorite...but I think you should go with your gut 😉

We chose beef and salmon (and veggie curry for those who need that option). Our reasoning is that every wedding has chicken and 9 times out of 10 the chicken is rubbery, dry, and/or bland. Before we had to postpone, we recieved reply cards back and it was a 60-40 split (not counting a couple of vegetarians), so I'm confident in our decisions.

I would do chicken and beef too. I say go with your gut and they can complain about it all they want. I'd hate to have to spend money on food that no one will eat. That would make me more upset than spending money on food that's "not black tie appropriate" but still satisfying that people will eat it. That's wild to me that your mom and grandma even think that.

I’d go chicken and lamb but agree with choosing a different veggie with the lamb.
My fiancé is a chef and he also said chicken and lamb with a different veggie (he spit out a bunch of things I didn’t understand but green beans something or other or some kind of potato is what I heard) would be great choices.

On the duck, little drumsticks of duck are very popular, but confit duck is a fatty meat cooked in extra duck fat. Like any superfatty food, delicious, but lots of people take a bite, it drips fat all over, and they push away anything with high fat. Other duck prep might be quite popular. And last I heard, only fried chicken eaten from the hand was off limits for formal meals. Recipes where you would eat it with a fork, are fine.

Generally, I think chicken and beef are your safest bets in terms of people liking at least one of them. Based on the photos you shared of your venue in another post, I'd guess any food they serve is going to be appropriately "fancy." I love salmon, but we live in CA and it's very common here; however, we have close family on both sides (here and in the Midwest) who NEVER eat fish so they'd be whining.... Smiley winking You know your crowd best, but for us lamb would be unheard of...no one we know eats or serves lamb. At daughter's reception they had a dual-plated chicken breast and filet mignon; except for the 4 people who ordered the vegetarian meal, everyone ate and raved about the food. Good luck!

I know I’m going against some of the crowd here, but I’d definitely eliminate the lamb. I don’t know many people who eat lamb, and I think you’d appeal to a lot more of your guests with any of the other dishes. All 3 of them sound great.

I agree that there's nothing wrong with serving chicken, but the salmon sounds so good! I'd also go with beef over lamb. Much safer choice.

My friend had a very formal wedding and had salmon, fillet, and duck as options and i don’t know anyone who chose the duck, it was about 50/50 salmon and beef

Chicken not being elegant enough is crazy. Thousands of caterers across the country wouldn't offer it at all if that was the case. It is a safe choice but not easy to cook to the correct temperature in large quantities. Beef and salmon are more universally appealing than lamb.

Have you asked other guests (the men in your group) what appeals to them? Everyone's tastes are so vastly different.

I'd choose the salmon and the beef. That way you have a fish and a red meat.

Chicken is totally ok for a black tie affair, but I think trying to cover the widest spread is the best bet.

If it is a black tie affair, I would do salmon and lamb. That sounds pretty fancy. Smiley winking I am personally not a fan of chicken BREAST. It tends to be too dry and difficult to eat. Most choking emergencies are from chicken (emergency room nurse here LOL) and I wouldn't want that at my wedding.

ETA: Have you gone to a tasting? What tasted the best? That will always win every food debate.
