Wedding invitations

Miranda, on January 12, 2022 at 7:31 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
We are having our 'wedding' on August 20th. I say it that way because we have decided for insurance reasons that we are going to the courthouse to get married in March or April. But we still want to have a wedding with all of our family and friends there as well. When we have the wedding in August we are having a 'ceremony' that way our parents can see it. (My parents recently moved to Florida and don't know if they will be able to come up for when we actually get married). With us going to be actually married already I don't know how I should write out our invitations.

Originally I would of put the wedding of Courtney Higdon and Miranda Castle. But since one of us will already legally have changed our name by then(we haven't decided whose last name we are keeping) how would I write that out?

Since this technically won’t be a wedding (your wedding will be at the courthouse), I would either call it a vow renewal or celebration of marriage.

Would it be more of a celebration? To me a few months doesn't seem like a vowel renewal. Which that could be im so used to it being years before a vowel renewal not months.

You can call it whichever you prefer. Technically, yes, it would be a vow renewal. Any time you take vows after already being married (even if it is the very next day), it is a vow renewal. Personally, I think I would choose to call it a celebration of marriage- It sounds more lighthearted and gives a party vibe! You could say something to the effect of “you are invited to celebrate the marriage of Courtney and Miranda” or “you are invited to the Higdon (or Castle) celebration of marriage”. Or you could skip the label altogether and just say some thing like “come celebrate Courtney and Miranda‘s happily ever after!”

I really like those ideas. Thank you at least now if anything I feel like I have a base line of how to word it.

Let's say, for example, you both go with Higdon. Then use something like, We invite you to share in the Celebration of Marriage (or Vowel Renewal) of Courtney Higdon and Miranda Higdon, née Castle. Or vice versa.

This way you would include both of your maiden names.

Not to overcorrect, but people have been misnaming vow renewals. It’s vow renewal not vowel renewal. I know it’s probably autocorrect.

My husband and I just had our first names on our invitation. It fit better. I assume people will know who Courtney and Miranda are??

Also just call it a wedding who cares. Lots of people get married legally before their wedding esp during covid. Unless you already had a wedding (ceremony + reception) that was something other than a courthouse, I don’t see the need to call it a vow renewal. Legal paperwork and religious (or non religious) ceremony are not the same thing.
