Wedding Insurance

Kari, on December 31, 2019 at 3:56 PM Posted in Planning 1 4

We are required to purchase supplemental insurance for our wedding by our venue. We have access to our venue from Thursday afternoon through Sunday afternoon and six people will be staying on site Friday-Sunday. Our rehearsal will be on site Friday evening (20 guests) and the wedding is Saturday (60-80 guests).

Our venue did not give us any specific requirements for the insurance, but did suggest one company that others have used before. I found a different company (through a different venue) that costs about half as much.

Are there specific things I need to look for in a wedding insurance policy?

When purchasing wedding insurance, should I consider our event to be 1, 2, 3, or 4 days?

Any companies you would or would not recommend?

Our venue recommended we get Special event insurance through our Renters insurance (/homeowners insurance). They told us multiple people had tried getting cheaper insurance through other companies, but that this was the cheapest option. I think they told us a specific dollar amount to get, and it was just for the day of the wedding.

When we were considering a venue that required insurance we were planning to just go through our regular insurance company that we use for renters, car, and valuable property insurance. If you call the insurance company and explain the situation to them they will let you know how much coverage you need.

My venue required wedsafe. It seemed like a good deal to me, fortunately I didn’t need to use it.

WedSafe is the insurance company that our venue suggested as well, but another venue recommended The Event Helper, so I looked into both.

For a $1 million general liability policy (I work at a College and that is what we require for anyone renting our facilities), WedSafe cost $175 for liability only covered 48 hours surrounding the date of the wedding (so if we had a 4 or 5pm wedding it could include the rehearsal dinner the night before and clean-up the following day, but not any earlier set-up). The Event Helper was $105 and cost the same for 1-4 days of coverage. WedSafe also offered event cancellation insurance (an additional $175); I'm not sure if The Event Helper had that option.

Both our venue (which is catering) and bartending service have their own insurance as well so this is supplemental insurance, but our venues lawyer is requesting they have all couples have supplemental insurance now. I'm just not sure if we need more days of coverage or really just need to worry about the wedding itself, and I'm not sure what details I should specifically be looking for within the policy to guarantee we are covered.
